So, looks like the ps3 is completely hacked.

With my luck I will end up getting one with the new firmware haha. What was the release date for the 3.56 firmware? That way when I go buy a new one I can just look at the MFG date on the console and hopefully by the date be able to tell if I am on 3.55 or not before I even get home.

3.56 was put out according to the sony blog just last week. Believe me there is no way they you will find a system with the latest firmware on store shelves. If you went to the store and happen to get 3.56 then you got a return.

I bought the a new 160gb ps3 slim back in October. It came with 3.30. 3.30 was released back in April.

Chances are you'll likely find 3.50 or something.

You don't need to downgrade, you'll be able to get custom 3.56 fw soon if you can't already. That's what's so devastating to Sony about this hack. There's no software solution to prevent it.

You just have to understand that if you hack, there's potential youll be unable to connect to PSN temporarily, or you may eventually be permabanned if Sony decides to go that route. Offline, the console is yours to hack at your pleasure.

well suing everyone has never stopped hackers before. however they should have been far more discreet, theres many ways to release on the scene, hackers need to stop trying to get that pat on the back from whats mostly just other kids and just find alternative, discreet ways to release. keep it underground where it belongs, you don't just use your ISP and a website saying hey everyone, here is my SN, this is my hack or puchase this hacking hardware from me, here is where to order, ejoi...god people are stupid

Makes me want to buy another PS3. I sold mine three years ago, never looked back and lived happy ever after with my Xbox 360. But I have to admit that this "jailbreak" has me itching to buy a new PS3.

I jailbreak my iPhones and I can tell you that without jailbreaking an iPhone, there is no point in owning one. I'm going to go out on a limb and see the same is true for a PS3.

*shrugs* While I wouldn't say it's USELESS without a jailbreak, the iphone is a lot more useful with it... and there was a time (like before cut/paste was standard) where it WAS pretty useless without a jailbreak. I'd probably have an Android by now if the iphone wasn't capable of being hacked. But that's another topic for another forum.

Anyway, Sony has released another fw update and fix so users of the 3.55 firmware can't use a DNS trick to access PSN. Good news for those who are afraid of hacked servers and the like, as Sony has been very active in stopping hackers from having PSN access. Bad news for those of us who just want to keep games on the HDD though. I never played online games, but I did use the PS3 for Netflix. Now I have to decide between an offline only PS3 (I do have a 360 for online stuff and Netflix) or a legit disc only PS3. Costs are obviously the same, but both now have convenience drawbacks.

That sucks that you are going to have to use the product the way it was intended to be used.

Just had a thought, what does this do as far as unencrypted access to the Blu-Ray? Is it likely that someone will write an app that lets you rip a Blu-Ray movie directly to the local hard drive and then watch it later? I could see my Netflix return times decrease significantly if that happens.

Someone could pretty easily write such an application.

I think multiman might be able to already do this.

This was one of the stupidest things I'd ever read:

Until I read this:

Well, I'm glad I didn't disappoint.

Without a jailbreak for the iPhone, I'd be much happier with a Droid phone on Verizon's network.

Without a jailbreak for the PS3, I'm much happier on my Xbox 360.

I guess this time I'll qualify my statement with, IMO.

It does. I'm not sure how much could be explained here without getting the thread locked... but multiman makes a copy of any blu-ray disc and keeps it on the HDD to load. This includes game AND movie blu-rays. I'm not sure if it can backup DVDs as well, but I'm assuming it can.

Also of note: this can be done with any external drive as well. You don't need to tear open your PS3 and upgrade the internal drive. If you want you can make buy a large 1-2 TB drive and stick it in an enclosure. Before Sony fixed their little DNS thing, you could also access PSN and therefore Netflix making it one hell of an HTPC.

Interesting... I've tried to copy a Blu-ray movie with multiman, but it never showed up. Copying games work fine though.

whoa, i never really thought of any good reason to JB my PS3 but if i can back up blu ray movies uncompressed that would be fucking awesome!!! and games would be pretty sweet too, since my nephews always have me switch them out since they have short attention spans haha.

Excellent news! :awe:

I'm split on the matter. I don't want hackers and cheaters to be able to access PSN, but I do like having my games backed up and would like to have them properly patched even if I can't play them online. Sony is in the right to issue bans and protect their system. I just wish there was some sort of middle ground... some way to keep my games on my HDD and know it's a legit copy from the game I bought. The only way I can think of involves an internet connection at all times, which would hurt some console users.

Oh well... such is life.

nah its great news imo. if you can definitively detect hackers even though you can't do anything about them, just ban them from connecting to PSN.

remember, we can be split on the issue...but hacks are already around (not even legit vs non legit games withstanding)

I'm sure piraters will probably have 2 PS3s if that is the case...

What kind of bothers me is that CC info is sent unencrypted....WHY? Did they hire noobs to do this work? Maybe the good that comes out of this is that sony fixes their network.

So you think pirates... people who are going out of their way to not pay for games... are going to buy another entire PS3? I don't know what to say about that.

debating getting a 2nd ps3

not for piracy but because I am skeptical there will be any further mods past 3.55 and I am interested in the Emulators and possibilities of the PS3 as a media player... but I am also interested in playing legit games online.

That's not correct, if you read the updated articles at sites like ArsTechnica, the CC info is sent using HTTPS / SSL just like Amazon and online banking.

The hacker chat / PDF is only showing that IF you install a hacked firmware AND that firmware is set to use faked certificates and hacked DNS THEN you can decode the SSL traffic on that one PS3. Just like using hacked software on anything else like a PC or 360.

But that hacked firmware could also do anything else, like run a keylogger or FTP your pr0n collection to secret servers in Myanmar.

On a normal, unhacked PS3 the SSL / HTTPS traffic with your CC number is securely encrypted.

Interesting that they began banning. They must feel confident that spoofing the identification of the PS3 won't be around very quickly.
