So much for that... Content providers force Hulu to withdraw content from Boxee (and TV.com)

Foolish move on Hulu's part. I was hoping that Hulu would eventuality come to Tivo but I guess that's never going to happen.

So Boxee made the announcement that friday they are going to need to pull hulu from it's software. Personally i've come to enjoy Hulu through boxee and have stopped torrenting shows because of it. So now I have started looking for alternatives for the appletv and I found a plugin for xbmc that I will try tonight. I am just curious what other people are going to try.

Merging this into the thread in AV

If anything, it's more likely they'd do a deal with TiVo, because _they're a cable box_. You don't need a cable box if you don't have cable.

Actually, it wasn't Hulu's idea. In fact, read their latest blog post here: Link

You can clearly see they're pissed off about it too. Its the "content providers" that demanded it.

Isn't Hulu owned by the content providers though? I thought NBC and Fox financed the operation.

EDIT: I was halfway right, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulu

Hulu is a joint venture of NBC Universal and News Corp, with funding by Providence Equity Partners, which made a USD$100 million equity investment and holds a 10% stake.[1]

Yes, but my point was that Hulu as a subsidiary is clearly irked at its overlords for doing this to them.

I use this:

Tversity

I've dabbled with streaming HD to my 360, XBMC works great for normal stuff.

I just tested the Hulu plugin on XMBC and no dice, sucks.

I'll assume your XBMC is the latest version.

Sorry you can't get the Hulu plugin to work. My laptop is running Win2k so I don't/can't use the media center to stream stuff to my Xbox from windows. No big wiggle, Tversity does what I need.

Zinc from zeevee.com might be worth looking at. It's based on Firefox so it still works with Hulu, though the auto-fullscreen is broken atm because of the changes Hulu made related to this.

I think I may be in the growing demographic of consumers that TV companies are terrified about.

I canceled my cable TV in January because I couldn't justify the cost. I'd gotten to where I watched about 95% of all my videos online through a combination of Hulu.com and Netflix, and using my dual TV-tuner card to essentially "tivo" a few others (most of which eventually show up on Hulu). So, now I save over $50 a month, have to use my wireless mouse to click links on Hulu and Netflix links on my big old CRT television, wait a few days to a few weeks to watch shows that have aired on TV, and don't have to put up with nearly as many annoying and loud adverts. Considering that my $50+ bucks also included 25% content that I had no desire to deal with (commercials) and that the cable company probably could remain quite profitable without charging customers a monthly cable fee (since the money is in advertising anyway), I feel no guilt giving Time Warner the finger.

Now, if only there was a solid plug in for Hulu and Netflix for easy navigation via Windows Media Center 2005

Thanks for the links and the topic, OP.
