You don't think the big agricultural companies want people to buy low end, low profit items, do you?

...and apparently the "less fortunate" are getting government assistance so that they can afford their meager lobster and steak dinners. Do you really need this spelled out for you? Seems the OP is self-explanatory, at least to me.

In case you still don't get it, lobster and steak are considered by most to be luxury items - certainly not something that you would expect to be purchased by a person on welfare.

Umm, I know that you can't buy prepared foods (like McDonalds and in-store deli) and I would think most states wouldn't consider live animals the same as groceries either.

they get x amount of dollars a month. if they blow it all on one trip then they deserve to starve the rest of the month.

Obviously it depends how you define 'luxury', but for someone relying on government assistance I think it's a fair characterization.

Its always about the big greedy companies. LOL, your shtick is so old.

I guess you don't know anything about whats going on in this country or how food stamps came to be.

Originally the proposal for food stamps only included basic items like rice, pasta, cooking oils, etc. However, big agriculture lobbied hard, and threatened to oppose food stamps. They cried that with poor people only able to buy low profit items (of course they didn't put it that way) that they would lose business since people would subsitute food stamp foods for what they were currently buying.

Every time someone makes the suggestion to limit what people can buy on food stamps, big agriculture screams bloody murder.

Search the web and you will see plenty of proposals for just a set of basic foods for food stamps.

At least they got the healthier diet soda. No high fructose corn syrup!

Actually, they probably need the calories to survive the rest of the month. Too much of anything can be bad, but sugar = PURE nutrition.

Oh, and fructose is the kind of sugar primarily found in fruit. If they bought a pile of oranges, they'd be getting fructose as well as hundreds of times more of the poison in a single orange than aspartame supposedly breaks down into in a single diet soda. Fructose is much more "natural" in the human diet than dextrose/sucrose because mankind did not rely on that for sugar until massive modern cane production and yet humans have been eating fruits for their sugar calories since the beginning.

But the fruit humans were eating until very recently were not the fruits we eat that have been bred for massive sweetness - wait, what am i doing, arguing? I figure by now you'd recognize sarcasm when you see it. I respect your opinions and beliefs, I honor your courage at defending those truths, and I applaud you for your contributions to ATOT over your many years of membership. Can we still be friends?

I'm sick and tired of this drivel. Just because something is 'natural' doesn't mean it's in any way beneficial or safe.

I see people in bodegas, yes BODEGAS, buying waaayyyy overpriced crap because their FAT lazy ass can't walk another 2 blocks to the supermarket, and pay with their food-stamp card.

I do see that it could be beneficial to physically impaired and seniors, but some of these losers are neither, and they still spend twice as much in the bodega as the supermarket would charge (and this is NYC supermarket prices, so double that).

When you sell drugs on the side you have no income so what if you eat free a couple days a month?

Traditionally (or so I hear, I've never tried this) bodegas will give cash back as change for using the food stamp card. It's difficult to get cash with food stamps since they started with the cards.

I'm responding to what the sarcasm is based on.

Anyway, the lack of hybrid fruits mostly meant that they needed to do far more gathering than they otherwise would and then EVEN more to make up for the extra energy expenditure. Of course, they were probably more efficient processors of caloric inputs as well but they still needed their fructose to survive.

Notice: I defended both HFCS and aspartame earlier. Yes, it is possible to be poor and have too many calories, but if that purchase blew their month's allotment of food stamps then they certainly have not reached their 2,000x30 calorie a month per person norm. Food stamps are usually only given to single mothers with children and typical children actually need MORE than 2K daily for growth and exercise.

How pathetic. Someone who has nothing better to do than hate on poor people.

He's right of course the poor have it so good. Their lives are paradise. They should suffer so he can lower his taxes .8%.

One person buying lobster on food stamp for reasons unknown clearly means the whole program should be scrapped. Starving kids on the streets build a strong country.
