I had an overnight monitoring job like that once. I found myself reading a lot of history books.

Putting an XBox on the company network sounds like a horrid idea. Do you have any idea how much bandwidth one of their game downloads can take up? People have easily gone over their 300 GB monthly Comcast data caps just by downloading a few big game demos. God forbid you screw up some overnight backup/batch job, and someone in IT finds out why.

I work in a NOC, very similar situation, but we do have an external internet connection which is a plus. I've actually gamed at work, but I find it requires more concentration than watching a movie and I am more likely to get too distracted from my actual work (still need to watch the alarms. ) so I refrain from gaming personally and stick to forums, movies, etc. I would not bring a gaming console, but that's just me. Just feels like it would be pushing it imo. We have lot of big screens though.

My recommendation would be to just bring digital content on a small hard drive. Heck could probably even setup a small portable router/drive setup that creates a hot spot, then you just connect to the wifi of that router and then access the hard drive.

mobile data carrier with unlimited data option.

That is the funniest thing I ever heard.

Yeah there's really not much for him to do I'd think. Make sure nothing is going to explode, make sure nobody is putting anything in the water, looking the other way when certain people do need to put things in the water.

I had a job like that once. It was the most boring wasteful time of my life. He should ditch the video and work on furthering his life.

My opinions.

I hope that you're talking about Fluoride there

So what is he supposed to do, exactly - stare at the clock for 10 hours?

@OP - I'd tell your friend to stick with Netflix. Online gaming is distinctive traffic - he probably won't get in trouble right away, but if somebody gets a bee in their bonnet about stuff, this'll stick out like a sore thumb when HR tells the IT guys to go find somebody to fire.
Yes, a flood of small packets, fired out and received very rapidly, versus periodic gobs of video data.

And of course the fact that the traffic is suddenly not between their network and Netflix or Youtube.

If you do use corporate network use a VPN at least. I do that at work even on our external connection. Mostly because whatever I'm doing requires my home servers so I just VPN to my house, but it also has the added benefit of not having any kind of distinctive traffic.

But didn't you say something about working that crappy job so he can afford to take his kid(s) fishing or something? Let's examine that logic.

So, he works nights, when his kid(s)s are sleeping, during the day, most likely they're in schools. If he wants to make more money, and have more time to take his kid(s) fishing, wouldn't he want to further his cause by bettering himself? So he can move up, make more money? Work during a time when his kid(s) are at school and play with them when they get home? No, instead he just wants to waste time by playing some games while on tax payers' dimes. The motivation is not there, so by simple deductive reasoning, his priority isn't to feed his kid(s) or take them fishing.

Sometimes, Occam's Razor just works; in this case, his priority is to play games. Simple as that.
Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

I had a job like once too and had it not been for the stuff I brought to read, I definitely would have gone insane - ok, more insane.

I sort of understand how he feels though. He's working during prime gaming hours. If you're a gamer, that has to really, really suck. But everyone has something that they're interested in if not passionate about - besides gaming. He should really try to explore those interests while he has the time. I think most people with kids would give their left nut to be able to do things w/o being interrupted. And sure, gaming is probably one of those things but he should really try to split his time up and do things that might be less fun but more rewarding in the long run.

Thanks everyone for the insight. This is why I came here! I think the solution is obvious - keep doing what he's doing (using the mobile data plan).

Where does he work and how may I get his job?

Actually, it's not all that hard. I almost did it myself. It's a good, solid choice for work, as there are a lot of older folks retiring and not a lot of people thinking to go into that line of work.

You have to just purchase a couple of books and take some tests. I think all in all, it costs like $100-$200. Then you have to "get your hours in" and you are hired as... I forget what they call it, but after you get your hours in, then you're a Class B operator. I think at first, it starts around $14 and change, but it's been a while. It obviously goes up from there, and if you're a go-getter and get more certifications under your belt, you get paid more to do the same job!

If anyone is actually interested in this info, let me know!

We're not talking about installing games and downloading updates.

We're not RETARDED (no offense to those who are).

Connect the phone to the wifi network and run everything though the vpn on the phone, is what I would do.

Does it have to be online gaming? Is he into any other sort of gaming? I do a lot of wargaming offline on my Ipad.

No I am not in the US. What there is no umlimited data option in the states?

Who are you using for unlimited data up here ? I know there are providers who offer it, but the ones I know of cap your speed when you hit a certain usage threshold.

This. Just get him a FPS and play it on hard mode. Or what others said, read more technical books and get ahead in life. That's what I did in college, worked a night shift at a gas station and read books out the yin yang. Everyone there said those books were just a waste of time and it'd never get me anywhere in life. Now I'm an AT 200K/yr baller with supermodel wife and 3 mansions.

Netflix is allowed but not game consoles?

Netflix isn't an unapproved device. In any case, does Destiny use that much data? I've had to game on a cellular hotspot before without passing the typical 5gb threshold for a month, though it was battlefield.
