The Wii-mote only needs a couple of buttons because the motion sensors in the remote and nun-chuck attachment removes the need for a multitude of buttons. They are releasing a standard controller as well that has as many buttons as the 360 and the PS3 controllers though.

Who would've thought a surgery game would be fun? A lawyer game? A brain teaser game? Blowing up balloons by blowing on your game console?

On that note Moore says 2 for 1;

Microsoft sides with Nintendo in fight vs Sony

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) sided with rival Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS) on Wednesday in the fight to unseat video game leader Sony Corp.(6758.T), saying many consumers will choose to buy both of their machines for the price of one PlayStation 3.

The bad blood between Sony and Microsoft in the fight for dominance in the nearly $30 billion video game industry has escalated over the last few days, with both sides trading barbs at the E3 Expo, the video game industry's annual trade show.

Microsoft entered the next-generation game console market first with its Xbox 360 last November.

Sony aims to extend its market leadership with its upcoming PS3, while Nintendo plans to offer a new game machine called Wii in the fourth quarter.

"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" Peter Moore, a Microsoft vice president, said in an interview. "People are going to buy two (machines.) They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3."

Microsoft predicted on Tuesday it will have 10 million Xbox 360 consoles in the market before Sony launches the PS3. The high-end Xbox 360 sells for $399, but it does not include a built-in high-definition DVD video player that comes with Sony's PS3.

Sony plans to sell a premium PS3 model for $599 when it debuts in North America on November 17, and Nintendo has not yet disclosed pricing for Wii.

Wii comes equipped with motion sensitive controllers to allow users to mimic the motion of wielding a sword or swinging a tennis racket.

Moore then turned pitchman for Nintendo's Wii, the latest offering from the Japanese company that once dominated the video game industry.

"People will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product -- like what I believe Wii will be -- with innovative new designs and great intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid," Moore told Reuters.

Sony currently dominates the worldwide video game market with a 66 percent share, while Microsoft and Nintendo each hold 17 percent, according to Strategy Analytics.

"We have 100 percent market share of the next-generation, and their job is to take that from us," said Moore.

"When I think on everything that we've got going right now that is real versus what Sony promises to do six, seven months from now, obviously we feel very good about where we stand."

LOST IN TRANSLATION

Despite Microsoft's head start with the Xbox 360, the software giant still faces an uphill climb in Sony and Nintendo's home turf.

Microsoft received a tepid response to its Xbox 360 debut in Japan and demand fell short of expectations during last year's holiday season when it sold about 100,000 machines.

The company introduced a competitively priced console in Japan, but some of its game titles did not appeal to Japanese gamers. Moore expects upcoming role-playing games like "Lost Odyssey" and "Blue Dragon" from the creator of the popular "Final Fantasy" series to do well in Japan.

"Quite frankly," said Moore, "if we're sitting here a year from now and things continue to fall flat, then we might say 'we don't know what to do anymore."'

wow...microsoft must hate sony! anyhow, i think what msft is saying, is what a lot of people here on ATOT are already thinking...we'd rather have 360+wii, than just one ps3

And to think that 1 year ago at last year's E3, nobody could have imagined how much thing's could have changed for Nintendo. From what I remember, most people then were expecting this next console to be Nintendo's last non-portable console.

That's your opinion. However, after seeing Nintendo own this E3 and the amount of die-hard Nintendo haters on this forum and elsewhere change their tunes, the estimated pricing, and the overwhelming level of popular press for the Wii...I find it hard to hold that position.

My mom bought into the DVD craze rigt away. Right around when they were first showing up, she bought an RCA one for like $350 bucks, and she bought like 3 40 dollar movies. We didn't buy another DVD for over a year afterward, when they were actually affordable. Felt kinda crappy to have a DVD player just sit there for so long.

For $200 you can't go wrong with the Wii. Think the controller is gimmicky? You can pick from a ton of Gamecube, NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and TurboGraphix games (if not even more).

I'm hoping Nintendo will let buyers get a whole bunch of free virtual console games right off the bat. Getting a free game or two from each virtual console system would be a great deal.

Sony Defends Two Console SKUs but looks silly in doing so.

Phil Harrison has spoken to the BBC news site, defending the company's decision to release two versions of PS3 and countering claims that the cheaper model will not be High Definition. As mentioned on Technology Blog yesterday, specs sheets released to journalists at the pre-E3 Sony conference revealed that the cheapie PS3 lacks Wi-Fi, memory card slot and, crucially, an HDMI port. However, Harrison claims:

"What we should be clear about is that the functionality is identical in both machines... It's just that the technical method of extracting audio and video from the devices is slightly different"

Harrison doesn't talk about the amends made to the top-end package, though. One HDMI slot, not two. Four USB ports, not six. One ethernet port, not three. Of course, it is often the case that final console hardware fails to match the exact specifications of the prototype, but Sony has been bullish about the wider entertainment abilities of the machine. PS3 is, after all, the company's Trojan Horse for Blu-ray technology. Yet with its home entertainment options reduced, it may be less desirable to those crucial early adopters who pore over specs with religious intensity.

Gah Sony can be so full of it sometimes.

Typical sony bullsh!t. What has happened to them? I remember playing FF7, Twisted Metal, etc.. on the PS1 and just loving it. Now I can't even bring myself to even wanting to try out a PS3.

Crysis and Spore are what have piqued my interest the most on the PC front. Though, I don't think I'll be able to upgrade my PC enough to run Crysis.

the Wii, I just can't see it doing well. To me, its a gimmick. It is super fun to play and try out, but seriously, the fun will run out extremely quickly. Right now its fun because you have to wait 2-hours to play and then don't get much time. If you have that sitting in your house, trust me, you will get bored of it extremely fast. Can you imagine inviting a friend over to play Madden and having to the move the controller all over the dam room?
You and cvsin really crack me up.

thanks! I'll be here all week. But honestly, I liken it to other gimmicky games, such as those you find, or used to find, in an arcade. Once you can play them all the time, they just aren't as fun.

Also, Wii will sell for $200. just announced on Forbes.com

So says an analyst, I'd like to hear Nintendo's official announcement. I'd be thrilled if it's $200, but I won't be disappointed at $250.

Regarding "gimmicky" games - I just went to Sega's GameWorks arcade in Las Vegas. Easily the best arcade I've ever been in. 90% of the games were interactive. Hardly any had a plain old joystick and buttons. People like interactive games.
