So my girlfriend wants me to get rid of my triple monitor setup

I'm currently running 3 21.5" 1080p monitors. My girlfriend is saying it takes up too much horizontal space so I'm going to try a triple monitor setup that doesn't take up as much space. My problem is that I want at least 3600 pixels horizontally while not having too much vertical height.

I did some research and came to the conclusion of 3 4:3 1600x1200 monitors with about a 20" screen size would work. My final res with nvidia surround would be 1600x3600. The only real monitor choice I found was the Dell UltraSharp 2007FP. Has anyone had any visual experience with this monitor? Or what could be my other options? I think 3x 16:10 monitors would have too much vertical height for me. I need the monitors to be 19" in height TOPS.

Tell her she can't see the monitors from the kitchen.

But seriously, how much space are you needing to save.

I think the real question is: why do you need so much horizontal space but don't want vertical pixels?

To answer your question directly though: Dell Ultrasharps are pretty much the top of the line when it comes to consumer monitors. You should have no problems. However, getting two 2560x1440p (pixels are usually listed WxH; you listed your final resolution in reverse by accident I think) will give you more horizontal resolution across fewer monitors and with less vertical space.

Whoops yes I did. I was going to run them in portrait mode side by side.

We currently share a desk and will probably so for at least 2 more years through grad school.

I'm a light gamer so I would like to keep it at 3 monitors so I do not have a bezel right in my face.

The 2007fp monitors are quite pricey for what you get. They are targeted towards business and priced accordingly.

I agree with the thought that two 2560X1440 monitors is your best bet. For your light gaming you can go landscape for the main monitor.

I recently bought a NEC LCD2090UXi for less than 500 euro, by getting a lucky EOL sale. Current price is 200 euros more though, as amazon has gotten rid of their stock.
I would recommend you look for those kind of sales for 1600x1200 screens. Currently seeing a Fujitsu screen going for 300 euro, with the Dell being slightly more expensive, and only available in the UK.
Still, if you can get three Dells for $1000, that's an okay deal.
I'm currently running a 30"+20" portrait setup. That means gaming has less pixels compared to 3600x1600, but overall width is higher (3760x1600), and for gaming there's no bezels, and I don't need to worry about NV's surround constraints. 30" screens are more of a commodity, than 20" 4:3, so you might get an overall better deal out of it.

2560x1080?

Too few pixels? It would give you somewhat of a wide form factor, plus absolutely no bezels.

What kind of games do you play? If they aren't FPS, how about a 3840x2160 resolution in a single 50" screen? You are limited to 30Hz refresh, but MMOs and RTS games probably work fine and it would take less desk space than your current three monitors.

I think what should be happening is your computer should be telling you to get rid of your girlfriend.

get rid of your GF and get 3 2560x1600 monitors

This.

It seems like a pretty complicated solution to replace monitors and all this crap when you could just get another desk or something. It sounds like she is being unreasonable.

If you are living in grad school housing, I've got to take the GFs side here. 3 20" monitors are almost five feet across if in landscape. You can't just flip them to portrait and push them together? What is causing the 19" height limitation, your desk?

As someone who recently went through grad school I have to ask, how did you find the time to game? Have you considered mounting one of them on the wall, assuming that the desk is in a corner?

"light gamer" "3 monitors".... I suppose you gave the same reaction* as my wife did this morning when I suggested that we should put about half the mugs in the cupboard into storage so that cupboard isn't chock-full of mugs.

"I'm a light coffee drinker, that's why I need 26 mugs in the cupboard!"

* - the sort of reaction that strongly suggests that she's not going to talk to me unless she absolutely has to for at least half an hour.

So it's not just my wife that does that with the coffee mugs?

"Oh but I love the look of this mug so much!"... never mind the fact that there's already a box in storage containing extra mugs. WTF. She would even buy me mugs that she thought I'd like despite the fact that my diet/condition precludes me drinking any drink normally found in a mug.

Then someone in either side of the family would buy either of us a mug as a surprise present... great.

And I thought I was the only one. My wife and I started getting mugs when we'd go on vacation. Then we started getting them as gifts. And pretty soon, we have a cabinet overflowing with coffee mugs and several boxed up in another room. Now we've told everyone, "No mugs as gifts ever!"

Buy another desk. Problem solved.

In all seriousness, is there no way to add another desk? I was just in the same situation with my girlfriend and I rearranged furniture and grabbed a 2'x5' folding table at Lowe's and BAM!, we had a second desk.

This is why I'm glad I'm single. Nobody is going to tell me to change anything.

Those ultra wide monitors look interesting though... Linux only supports 2 monitors and I've been struggling with crappy work around to get 3 working, but 2 of these ultra wides would be nice... one on top of each other.

Stack two ultra wides one on the top and one on the bottom. I have one computer hooked up to a 40" TV.
