So my subscription ran out and ...

I haven't found a compelling reason to renew it. I don't miss full searches that much. The pm limit is bearable as long as I remember to clean it out. I can supress pop ups (don't even know if AT uses them anymore) and the bandwidth seems reasonable, so far. Hmm... why should I renew? Am I forgetting something?

i haven't renewed either, and it has been about half a month. I do miss the PM limit and full text search (sometimes) but i haven't been compelled to reup yet.

Thanks to the crew who provides us this board, the non-subscriber speed is now probably up to snuff with a subscriber's speed. That was the only reason to subscribe before... to me anyway... but I never did.

Hope I didn't jinx anything.

what do you mean by full text search? I've been a subscriber for so long, I forgot what the difference was.

although, my subscription runs out this month! :Q

I don't see why you would pay for something that's offered for free unless you really felt you wanted to support it financial... it's like shareware

I could notice the difference now that i am a non-subscriber. sometimes i still do, but it isn't nearly as bad as before.

Oh, another good reason to subscribe...... is that you are less likely to be banned or given a vacation if you say something that the mods don't like It has saved me a few times.

There were benefits. Faster speed, higher pms, and much better searching. Plus yes I did want to support AT since I saved money on hot deals and could sell my stuff for free in FS/T. But since I use both of those forums much less lately, I didn't see a direct reason to subscribe. I rarely venture into the other forums for help, and when I do I end up helping more people than asking questions so I figure my contribution there is on the positive side.

support the board if you use it. I've taken advantage of so many hot deals and whatnot that I feel 20 bucks or so is not that bad.

I have not renewed either. If they give me a t-shirt or something more tangible I might...

I pay for it because I like Anandtech, and I use it's services much more so than any other site. I'm sure that I use my subscription's worth of bandwidth, maybe more. I feel it's worth supporting.

To tell you the truth, I subscribed back when the forums were VERY VERY slow at peak hours.. but ever since the upgraded servers, my subscription ran out, and everything's fine and speedy again.

I mostly did it to support Anand, but looking to my bank account I don't think I can support him and re-subscribe anytime soon

my subscription ran out a month or so ago and havent felt the need to re-subscribe either atm. 1000 PM limit was useless to me. i dont do anything in FS/FT so the majority of PM's are forum notifiers for my thread subscriptions. speed is pretty good on the non-sub servers too. ads arent a problem.

i might re-subscribe if new features for subscribers only are in the works ever materialize.

Increased Private Message Limit (1000 PMs instead of 100)
Dedicated Server Access with improved performance (significantly more bandwidth offered to subscribers for faster access)
Full-Text Search
Buddy Lists
No Banner Advertisements
...plus much more to come

Oh so you use hot deals. Great. I don't. So far nobody has given any compelling reason why someone in my situation would want to subscribe, so I've made up my mind not to. Thanks for all contributions in the thread so far.

My best reasoning would be that you enjoy the place alot, why not support it???

Everyone can help out in one way or another, this is just another example.

Its sort of like pirating software in a way. If you enjoy the software, why not help out the people that are responsible for it???

Pirating software is NOT a good analogy for paying for online content. By pirating, you are using the product against the EULA and getting something for free which raises the price for everyone else (supposedly). Sites like this OFFER two options, pay and non-pay, and each one has a certain level of benefits. Non-paying members should NOT be made to feel like they are stealing what AT has to offer at the expense of other people. However, I have seen this kind of peer pressure put on non-subscribing members by those that do subscribe, sometimes. I feel this approach is unjustified, but don't want to turn this into a subscriber vs. non-subscriber thread. I am more trying to understand the economic model of online content sites and what role the public is expected to play in them.

And, I do support AT. I spend a lot of time offering advice and helping people out in other forums. Well now I spend less time here than in the past, but for every question asked I offer my help probably 3 times. Seeing as this is a community, this kind of support is valuable. As far as monetary support, what are each member's obligations? Anand hasn't published any statistics on costs, profits, etc. for running this place and doing all the reviews on the main page. I have no information to work on to establish a baseline for what I should be pulling out of my pocket, and handing to the owners of this site. Supposedly, forums cannot profit by just advertising. But to what extent the membership should be expected to contribute cannot be determined without disclosure of financials.

For instance, NPR (National Public Radio) tells you what their costs are, how much the public contributes, what foundations give to them and how much they give to them. This full disclosure has educated the public, which benefits from this great informative radio station, on what is reasonable for them to contribute in order to maintain the product they have been receiving. Online content sites (computer-related, news, financial, etc...) have not offered the same to their members. I guess I am saying that I have questions about why I should contribute monetarily, and to what extent, before I do so. Doesn't that sound reasonable?

edit: sorry I had to make my pt. more clear
