Keep your chin up man. I was a little concerned with the way you were talking early in the thread. it seemed to me you were overly optimistic, and setting yourself up for disappointment. I didn't want to be a downer and say anything. This kind of thing takes awhile to sort out, and improvements slow in coming. Surgery's surgery, and it can really kick your ass. Add to that, previous long term pain, and medication tolerance, you'll have a rough time for awhile.

All the best to you and the wife. Hopefully this will be a distant memory this time next year.

Yep...and if the nerves were compressed, they may take some time to heal...if they ever do.
I know several people whose back pain is far worse after back surgery than it was before the surgery...BUT, you never know. Hopefully, your wife recovers and the pain goes away completely.

You may have had 20% of a wife the last 10 years but she has had 120% of a husband.

Best wishes to you both.

I'd say 180%.

Fritzo,
I know how hard it is and I commend you for being such a dedicated husband.
My wife has been disabled for 2 years. Lots of similarities, but a different root cause. She has a long history of blood clots and a couple years ago, ended up with nerve damage and permanent constant pain in her back and left leg. She can walk, but can't handle more than about 30 minutes of being on her feet or even sitting, so most of her time is spent laying in bed.

The weight gain is pretty hard to avoid when you have very limited mobility. I'm not expecting that losing weight would fix my wife's issues, but I am convinced that it would improve them. I got her to go swimming with me a couple months ago and that was great because she was able to get in some physical exercise without the pain that comes from her standing or sitting. Unfortunately, she fell and broke her foot in December, likely due to weakness and dizziness from all the pain meds. So the swimming has been on hold, but I'm going to try to get her back to it as soon as she is able to.

Good luck to you. I hope things are getting better.

UPDATE It's been two months since the surgery, and I have to say it's been a fantastic success! She's off of 4 medications, they're weening her off of two pain medications, she's able to move around normally, and she's down nearly 50 lbs. The problems with swelling and fibromyalgia have nearly disappeared, and she's actually doing 5 miles a day on a cross trainer now!

We spent two years jumping through hoops to get this surgery done, and now it's probably going to save the insurance company $50K a year in medical costs, and the effects were nearly immediate. It literally reminded me of this Family Guy clip:

I'll post some after pics in a couple of months when she's got the full sexay thing going back on. Thanks for all of your support!

Woohooo

Awesome, congrats to you both

Fritzo followers over the last decade probably know that my wife has been disabled for a long time. She received a severe back injury while working as a police officer, had to have spinal fusion surgery which caused nerve damage, which in turn made it painful for her to move, which in turn meant she had to take an ENORMOUS amount of drugs and pain killers, which in turn lead to a lot of weight gain, which in turn led to more inflammation and more drugs...you see where this is going.

After a two year process, she finally got doctor recommended weightloss surgery approved from our insurance and it's scheduled this Monday. The doctors theorize that the surgery should shrink her liver and lower her body inflammation, which in turn should get rid of her constant pain and remove the need for her zillions of medications.

I've only had about 20% of the lady I married for the last 10 years. Hopefully in the weeks after this surgery, I'll get my full wife back

Huzzah for medical applications that work

She must feel 10 years younger already.
