Well that was written in the early 1700's and it's sung every year but totally understood as being about shit way back when - but I think it stands the test of time as referring to Jesus.

At first I thought it was silly as well, but the statement purposefully references 'Just as they did on that night......This Christmas' we get a new king. This Christmas as in now vs they did as in then.

In evangelical speak, every year that doesn't bring the expected return of Jesus to punish sinners, burn the world, and return the faithful to heaven, is a reset year--so that means the new year is like year 0 all over again, so yet again, a New King must be born who will obviously return sometime in the new year to turn the planet into a sea of blood and guts such that the faithful can attain their rightful place at their New King's side. When that doesn't happen at the end of the following year (so far, these guys are basically Oh-for-2,017; even the Washington Generals have a better record than Jesus and his flock), we again get a New King.
