There was the GeForce 256, then the GeForce 2, GeForce 3, GeForce 4, then the FX series with the 5800, 6800, 7800, 8800, 9800 (nevermind that some of these were already Radeon identifiers.) Then the 120, 280, 380, 480, and now we're on the 980. What comes next? Let's just drop another zero and call it the GeForce 8.

I don't doubt NVIDIA's marketing team can figure this one out. The longer this goes on with all the major manufacturers, the less the numbers mean anyway.

NVIDIA already re-branded the 6 series as the 7-series when big K launched, and AMD did the same thing with the 7900's when they re-badged them R9 280(x) when Hawaii launched.

Intel does the same thing with their cpu's. The "-E" varieties of the their processors are always a number higher than their actual generation in terms of their tick/tock strategy.

Plus, they all skip generational numbers for whatever reason... GTX 7xx -> GTX 9xx, X79 -> X99, R9 2xx not starting at 1xx... None of it really makes any sense.

edit: maybe NVIDIA can just pull an Apple and stay at X (10) forever. MacOS is now on version 10.10.

I'm aware of both of these, hence my first post in this thread.

I don't doubt NVIDIA's marketing team can figure this one out.

The point is that the monikers have been nonsensical, incorrect, and IMO intentionally misleading for a while now. Both sides are guilty of re-branding old technology with new names and selling them as new.

The R9 280s even came with a price increase over what the 7950 was selling for at the time. As a matter of fact, they are still currently selling for roughly what a 7950 was going for at the time they launched in 2013!

I'm sure whatever NVIDIA calls big Maxwell, we'll see GM204 get re-branded as the mid-range chip of that nomenclature. UNLESS, big Maxwell is 16nm, in which case GM204 on 28nm will be EOL.

Those skips were usually due to them using them with their OEM parts. There were GTX 8xx's, and GTX 3xx's, and what not. They just existed in some prebuilt systems and not sold separately.

1080 may be out of the range for the 8th gen consoles, but on PC, its an old hat buzzword. Geforce 4K? Geforce UHD 4xx0?
