So someone broke into my car last night

I went to a concert last night in town (Otep + Blood Simple @ Gators in Farmington New Mexico) and arrived at 6PM. I parked in the Arbys' parking lot and walked to Gators which was right next-door. The concert ended at 10:30PM to which I abruptly walked out of the bar and back to my car only to find the driver-side window smashed all to hell.

When I got closer to my car, the first thing I looked for was my backpack which contained everything I have for college. That includes all of my books, my binders, my papers, my handouts, my notes, and all of the work I have completed thus far; not to mention the calculator and miscellaneous items.

Along with my backpack, they stole an MP3 player, 2GB Thumb-drive (which contained all of my English papers), a jacket, my headphones, about $12 in loose change I had been collecting, and two bottles of Aspirin/Excedrin.

They smashed out the drivers-side window with what I can imagine to be a crowbar. I assume they were drunk as they missed my window three times - denting the hell out of my car door in three places and somehow dented the front fender of my car.

I called the police as soon as I had calmed down a bit and reported my car had been broken into. A report was made of everything that was stolen and their value as well as everything that had happened that night up to that point. After the cops left, I spent the rest of the night and up until 4 AM driving around town looking for anyone wearing my jacket and possibly carrying my bag. Since it was fairly cold last night (30°F) I assumed they would have been at least wearing my jacket. However, I came up with nothing.

So today, I had the pleasure of seeing the damage in the light of day, cleaning most of the broken glass out of my car (most of which I had been sitting on previously) and then spending about four hours at the college trying to figure out how the hell I am going to complete my finals. Seeing as how I have relatively three weeks left and no means of completing my finals, I am pretty screwed here. The scholarship I have pays for everything for two years as long as I don't fail even one class. Also, I am in the Honors Program taking Honors Freshman Composition and Honors Intro to Psychology. If I fail even one Honors class, I won't be eligible to enter the program again for one year - all but sealing my chances of transferring to a four-year college on an Honor's Scholarship.

Oh, just for my own sake for anyone who may be in this area: a $100 reward to anyone who can produce my backpack with my work inside. I don't really care about the MP3 Player or anything else, I just want my bag back but it would be greatly appreciated if the MP3 and the rest can be returned as well. And $100 may not seem like a lot to most of you, but it is all I have in my bank account at the moment.

hasnt anyone ever told you to keep your valuables in the trunk? that thumb drive should have been a traveling copy of your files on your hard drive also. sorry it happened, but damn a lot of the loss could have been avoided.

did they rip out your stereo? i had some drunks break into my truck once. they took my tools i had behind the seat and ripped out my deck and speakers. dumb part is they broke both side windows. dumbasses, it has power locks.

That sucks

I think I'm going to take all my books and work in tonight, and not leave it in my car anymore.

$500 and I'll think about it.

Seriously though, if you have a police report you should be able to get some kind of special drop or extension for your classes.

That's harsh Ask some people in your classes if you can study with them for the finals, and talk to your proff's. It's a chance to get back onto your feet and hopefully pass all of your classes.

They tried to steal my car-jack as it was out of it's little cubby that it resides in. Some tools in my trunk were also out of place. It seems that they got spooked, or ran out of time and took off before they could take everything they wanted.

As for the stereo, they left that, thankfully. I don't think they had the know-how to take it out without destroying it.

The area behind Arbys is notorious for drunks and homeless people. Just the fact that they took my bag (which drunks and homeless people use to carry their stuff around), my jacket (self-explanatory), and my work-shoes were on the driver's seat instead of the back floor-board where they were before, leads me to believe that it was either a drunk (explains them missing my window three times) or a homeless person (explains the need for a generic Wal-Mart jacket and shoes).

[ATOT] Too bad you didn't catch them in the act so you could shoot them in the stomach and then poke out their eye with a pen and then pee in the socket and give them AIDS [/ATOT]

YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LEFT YOUR SHIT IN THE CAR ITS ALL YOUR FAULT YOU DOLT.

Seriously, that really blows and I hope you recover it. Talk to your professors. They are human and will probably cut you some slack. You aren't a flake, you did make it to honours classes somehow, and they will see that.

If they smashed the window, couldn't they have just popped the trunk and looked for valuables in there too?

Ok, let me ask you, was all this stuff in plain view in your car? If you have to keep something in your car, you ALWAYS keep it out of view. Assume, if someone can see it, they'll steal it.

Yea, there is a button to release the trunk which is how they got in there to mess with my tools.

And I have already spoken to my professors and a couple of students who offered to copy their notes for me as well as some handouts. The only problem is, I need to rewrite a 12-page Argument Paper, a five-page Essay about Human Development, and an eight-page Essay on Aleksandr Pushkin. Psychology shouldn't be a problem to pass. Sociology will be difficult, but doable. And my Russian class is going to be a major problem. I am still shocked that this happened. It is just something you never think will happen and when it does... you don't know what to do.

Thanks for all the concerns.

I'm absolutely terrified what would happen if someone stole all of my school work (mostly my laptop). I'd be pretty screwed. It sucks to hear it happened to you.

Nothing was in plain sight. My MP3 and Thumb-drive were in my console. My backpack was under my jacket, and my headphones were in the glove-compartment.

You've gotta be good at convincing people.

Hell, I convinved my English 101 Prof to not make me do the final 10 page paper. He agreed and gave me a B.

Is this really what ATOT has come to? Preemptively dredging up your frustration with the general group-think consensus usually prevalent in controversial threads? Just because you don't agree with them doesn't mean you have to crap in every thread. Throttle it back a little, calm down, and keep the arguments in their respective threads. Don't drink the grape-ade and you should be okay.

To the OP, sorry to hear about your situation.

What is worse, is that cases like these are rarely solved. People with backpacks can be seen everywhere and since it is getting colder out, finding someone with my jacket on is going to be nigh impossible. As well as finding my MP3 player and Thumb-drive.

Sorry to hear about that. I know the feeling. I left my car unlocked in my own driveway. I went to work on a Monday morning and noticed that both my CD wallets had been taken (nothing else is of value inside the car). My own damn driveway. That's a double feeling of being violated right there.

Do you seriously envision me in tears and all hysterical, frantically banging away at my keyboard to vent my frustration with ATOT by crapping in other threads? I'm not sure if my reply upset YOU, but I can assure you, I didn't write that response out of anger or frustration.

Someone is GOING to come into this thread advocating the death of whoever ripped off that guy's car. It's going to happen. If you're disputing that, you've obviously never read 90% of the posts in OT. I'm preemptively crapping on that person's response. Perhaps instead of dishing out advice on how to not get all upset and pissy in another person's thread, you should learn to throttle back your own emotions a little, Chief.

That really sucks dude. My brother had his car broken into even though he left absolutely NOTHING in sight. No change, clothes, CDs, or anything. The alarm was on, too.

Best of luck finishing up your exams. It's really sad that we as a society have to protect ourselves against this kind of bullshit, but that's just how it is.

Not sure what kind of car you have, but you should disable the trunk release if you can. Mine has a key slot which, when turned, disables the lever. From now on, I'm sure you'll never leave anything outside of the trunk.

Wow that totally sucks!

Rather then post the reward offer on here, why not print up some signs & post them in the area the car was parked in?

(Obviously if you get any responses you'll need to be very careful about how you handle meeting up with the perp to avoid getting robbed again)

They are less likely to break into the car in the first place if they don't see anything of value in there. What's in the trunk is pure speculation. So it does improve your odds somewhat to hide what you have, but it's by no means a guarantee.

I've had a car broken into twice and stolen once. The first time they took all my tools out of the trunk (didn't break any glass, just forced open the trunk), the second time they smashed a window and ripped out my stereo. I hate thieves.

Then it was just bad luck. If you'd been leaving your valuables in the car all the time, I might get on your case, but EVERYONE leaves some stuff in their car for a few hours at an event...and it sounds like you covered it up as best you could.
