I have one word of advice for you:

Those things are fvcking evil. Someone on the street behind us has one and everytime they use it I have to close all the windows in our house to keep from being smoked out.

Inconsiderate fvckwads.

Us Inconsiderate fvckwads just close our windows when her son "grills" in the backyard (this usually involves an entire container of starter fluid and enough smoke to smoke out the neighborhood). Notice close not slam and certainly not call 911...

A grill doesn't smoke for hours on end and they actually serve a purpose-you can cook food on them. Those firepits throw off way more smoke than a BBQ grill. I think they should be outlawed.

give me a friggen break.

We're lucky to have good neighbors on all sides. I'm sorry to hear that your lame excuse for a "neighbor" has her cornflakes urinated in every morning and insects in her rectum.

[Cartman] I'll Roshambo you for it. I'll kick you in the nuts as hard as I can, then you kick me in the nuts. Whoever falls over first loses. I'll go first. [/Cartman]

love the way things escalate over there...lol

ok in the UK you can get bad neighbours, but normally complaints are only made for legit reasons, ie being loud and abusive at odd hours, smashing stuff, keying cars etc....

its rare for someone to object to a legally made fence on your own property, even rarer for them to take you to court...lol

we have certain planning permission laws, you cant erect things over a certain height without permits, and to get those permits all your immediate neighbours concerned need to be informed and have the right to object etc.....

anyhow, could say more but works over so im fudging off home....toodlepip and tally ho

I would gather the rest of the neighbors and tell them to buy firepits of their own, then have a neighborhood firepit burning night!

In the 70's, all the neighbors got along, helped each other out, and had block parties in the street. Now look at it.

You can make them in your oven. I've never had a problem with grills putting out too much smoke. Those firepits are evil though. I hate them with a passion and I hate my neighbor with a passion when is inconsiderate ass uses it.
That's my point - my firepit does not put out much smoke because we use dry wood.

I remain skeptical. If it weren't annoying as hell I wouldn't be bitching about it.

Let me put it to you like this, it's 65 degrees outside at night and there is a nice breeze but I cannot open my windows or my house smells like it's on fire when he's using that damned thing. Would you be annoyed if you were me?

I would be annoyed but I would just close my windows for that night. It would seem to be the neighborly thing to do. A little tolerance goes a long way towards being good neighbors.

Well, I haven't called the cops on anyone. It is very annoying though and I wish whoever it is that uses that thing would stop. They seem to use it quite a bit during the fall, winter and spring though. I shouldn't have to shut myself in 3/4 of the year just because some inconsiderate moron wants to sit around a fire pit in his backyard as though he lives in Montana and there's nobody around for miles. This is southern California for fvck sake. We all live a few feet from one another! It's not like we have a shortage of pollution or smoke around here either. This dickhead was burning fires a week after the big fires we had out here a couple years ago. Not enough smoke and soot in the air already?

I'm done.

My neighbor called animal control when my dog gave a single bark, in the middle of the afternoon. (not an apartment).
Same neighbor plays godawful music loudly in the middle of the night. I usually don't bother to call the police but after they made the local noise ordinace more strict, and she was playing loud music when my wife had a test the next day (again), I finally did. I waited till the cutoff hour when penalties increased though

I would only narc someone if they had done it to me first, or if they were doing something that endangers others (ie DUI.)

Hm... what did the cops do the second time? Or did they not show up until the second call?

out her 3rd story window. She lives on 1, her son on 2 and her daughter on 3 (neither married in their 40's).

Time for a taller fence. But only inline with her 3rd story window

I don't know what it is but people in the Chicago suburbs are just firebugs.

I live in a fairly nice neighborhood(an unicorporated part of Downers Grove) and you can smell stuff burning damn near year round. Gotta love the smell of burning plastic.

I wish they used firepits like you showed. Most of the people near me just pile their leaves, tree limbs, and other garbage in a pile and then light the mess. The "considerate" ones try to wait for a light rain so it can smolder all day... dammit, burn your trash quick you cheap bastard and get it over with! I think if they didn't limit free garbage pickup to two cans that people wouldn't be inclined to burn so much stuff here.

/rant

BTW, I like that "bucket of water and see if she melts" trick. It might get you arrested but it would be so good for the soul.

Yep, the second call should have resulted in a fine.

A couple of years back on a cold memorial day we had a somewhat small bondfire going at a forest preserve patio in chicago. A cop came and made us put it out. This was a family outing with little children to grandparents. Kinda sucked.

That might work, it might not. But beating the living sh!t out of people still works, and probably always will.

I personally prefer option #2 better - I have no need to invite Mrs. Crotchety to a Father's Day (after) dinner which happened to be a day late so that my dad could be there. No one but immediate family present. As much as I say hi and talk to my neighbors, I don't care to break bread with most of them.

Hm... what did the cops do the second time? Or did they not show up until the second call?

They showed up and said again that there was nothing wrong but she was still complaining. Even said that she said we were good neighbors and that they have no reason to force us to put out the fire. It was getting late, and we decided to put it out anyway since everybody had to go to work in the morning.
