Jeremy Lin headline slur was ‘honest mistake,’ fired ESPN editor Anthony Federico claims

The ESPN editor fired Sunday for using "beloved patriot in the armor" in a headline about Knicks phenom Jeremy Lin said the racial slur never crossed his mind - and he was devastated when he realized his mistake.

"This had nothing to do with me being cute or punny," Anthony Federico told the Daily News.

"I'm so sorry that I offended people. I'm so sorry if I offended Jeremy."

Federico, 28, said he understands why he was axed. "ESPN did what they had to do," he said.

He said he has used the phrase "at least 100 times" in headlines over the years and thought nothing of it when he slapped it on the Lin story.

The power/significance of the number 69 strikes again!

Which just happens to be 17, Lin's number, away from 86, which is exactly what D'Antoni would have gotten without adding Lin to the rotation.

/edit: the page I looked at was old...his record was actually 111-158 pre-Lin contributions (103-143 in first 3 years with knicks.)

Considering he was probably a couple losses to getting fired before Lin came around, this is a dumb statement.

He gets paid either way, he is under contract. He will land lucrative deals whenever his time with the Knicks is up. Lin's skillset is as ideal for D'Antoni as D'Antoni's offense is ideal for Lin.

Nobody would have blamed D'Antoni for struggling with a roster full of frontline players and NOBODY to distribute them the ball.

Comment I saw said he was going to be cut after first Nets game to bring up D-Leaguer Mike James (now on 10 day contract with Bulls).

I saw another comment on internet that Boston might have picked him up if he was cut by Knicks.

lol not a bad start but Knicks scoreless after they took Lin out

Looks like Knicks burned all their 3 pointers against the Mavs.

Like I said I'll take DWill over Lin.

CP3 is probably the only better PG in the league than DWill, but his durability makes DWill a more reliable player.

I'd love to see him head to Dallas, but then where would Howard go? He has to pick his location before DWill does.

I'm actually hoping D12 gets traded to anyone besides the Nets. That way DWill is a 100% lock to leave NJ for Dallas. Getting both is a pipe dream IMO.

-10 for Anthony so far

Lin has a bad FG % but he's at +/- 0 and has 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 TOs

Tyson is +14 when he can actually be on the floor

Lin 21 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 turnovers.

New Jersey went 15/31 for 3 pointers, with 8/14 coming from Williams alone. Wow.

They shot their load yesterday against the Mavs. In this lockout season you can't really put too much stock in a win or a loss. I think they are a playoff team. I also think the Knicks will be better with Melo.

I'm just busting his balls, pun intended.

I think in time, they'll be lethal, they did display that at the start of the game. Melo needs time to readjust from being out a couple weeks. He missed a lot of shots at the rim that she shouldn't have. And free throws, the team needs to work on the free throws.

It was a better lineup with Lin, Chandler, Jeffries, Fields, and Novac or Shumpert.

regular season, yeah maybe. But when comes playoff time, you need real star/s who can take over a game and carry the team. I don't think Lin can do that yet. Melo can do that, but not in D'Antoni's system, it just doesn't suit him. Stoudemire is over the hill and doesn't have the same explosiveness inside.

NY need to either change the coach or get other top players that fit in D'Antoni's system. I like your lineup, they will be consistent, hard playing bunch of guys, and can compete night in and night out when really good team doesn't take regular games seriously. But in playoff when good teams kick it up a notch, this lineup just isn't athletic or skill enough to beat those top playoff teams.

Lin and Chandler need to be on the floor more. Novak could benefit from some extra minutes, his 3-point shooting is insane. NY just doesn't need Amare anymore; I would take Jeffries over him.

10% of me believes that, the rest of me thinks he's an out-of-work editor in a field that requires work history and he's trying to save himself. Besides, immature kids who do wrong can also be really sorry... that part means nothing. It's just too much of a coincidence.

Novak usually is good, but yesterday for 3 pointers shot 2 for 8.

Jeffries has no offense whatsoever.
