I think wegmans brand 1k sheet rolls are $1.30. That's a bit higher than I usually pay, and I'm not super familiar with it. I've only gotten it twice now as a trial run cause I still have a bunch. Preparing for the future and all of that. It's top quality. Wider than 7th generation. Since I'm already there, it works out pretty well, and shaves a bit off the price since I don't have to drive anywhere else.

A thousand sheets? What are they, single-ply and two microns thick? Nah, I'm a fussy bitch and my nethers deserve better quality

Single ply, but more than two microns. I only buy single ply if possible(pandemic dicked things up a bit). I can customize it precisely how I want. Multi ply ends up being too thick/thin cause it has fewer thickness steps.

Idk.... single-roll SCOTTS original TP specifically (wrapped in paper) are not terrible for a guy living alone .... one roll of that stuff lasts me 1.5 to 2 WEEKS.

To be fair I usually buy the biggest multi-pack I can get my hands on personally!
Think of the minimalists!

I have a friend (on a fixed income), he always seems to buy singular rolls of TP for some reason. Yes, he's always running out. But the store is just down the street (pharmacy), and more is always available. (Because, likely, smarter people don't buy single rolls, as you indicate.)

He can't stand to have "bulk stuff" taking up his living space(s).

I can't say I agree with him. I'm the opposite. I buy in bulk, large qty packages, and keep them around. My apt., looks like a warehouse, but at least I've always got plenty of TP in stock! Yes, I have a higher income, and I can more afford to buy in bulk. (But it's not like he couldn't. He just doesn't see the bigger picture / savings longer-term.)
Lol, I buy tp in like 4x12x double rolls at a time. Even as a bachelor I'd at least buy 8 at a time though. Not like I'm going to use that space above a cabinet or behind a trash can in the bathroom for something better.

I buy single rolls of toiletpaper cause they aren't wrapped in plastic bullshit. I can either use or recycle 100% of a single roll, and I pay less to do so. Wrapping four or more in a package doesn't necessitate a lower price ;^)
I hate you break it to you, but those arrive in the store in packaging, they just remove it for the shelf. Might be cardboard though at least.

Of course it's cardboard, and that gets turned into more cardboard after it's unpacked/recycled. Plastic wrap gets turned into waste, with a bonus of microplastic spread so everyone can get a little bit. My life is far from plastic free, but toiletpaper is an easy place to get rid of part of it.

the few remaining dollar stores near me now seem to be collective dust bins. easier to go to wally world and get your stuff there and the selection is better. I had no idea dollar stores sold food now a days but that sounds ghastly.

There was once both a dollar general and a dollar tree in this town, but the dollar general closed.

We have a fairly thriving community, thought, with a number of competing grocery stores (Hannford's, now Shaws, Stop&Shop, and a market basket further down), along with a few convenience stores, one right across from Shaws.

Although the Dollar Tree ("Everything's a $1 $1.25") does decent business, with all of the older women around these parts, the grocery stores all seem to be making it thus far. Plus there's a super Walmart down the street too, trying to steal their biz.
Dollar stores had their time in the sun prior to the last 20 years but they're not needed anymore with the rising costs of everything. the best grocery store chain I've ever shopped at was Publix and boy do I miss that chain. It was one of the few good regional stores I've shopped at when I lived in the south. had my first chopped sandwich there too, the cold kind. boy was that good!

I don't like the ultra-softs. They're like barely bonded fluff. Scott's a quality brand, but I've been boycotting them since the early 90s for reasons I can't remember anymore :^D Marcal's good, but kinda hard to find, and that 7th generation I got from amazon is pretty good, but single ply has gotten hard to find on amazon for some reason.

I'm not saying it's right to buy a single item quantities of things but there is definitely some value, actually quite a lot of value, for lots of people to have a pleasant living environment and not feel like they're living in a warehouse.

The simple decor, clutter free, organized apartment I keep is a big part of my mental happiness and starting the day and ending the day on a good note. It puts me in a good headspace.

Any brand but Scott and you're gonna have a bad time.

No reasonably strong single-ply TP is going to be "Charmin-squeezably" soft though.
Sam's club Members Mark TP is surprisingly good (and notably better than Kirkland)

There's a middle ground between wire shelves full from floor to roof with nonperishables, and paying a 50% premium for smaller quantities though. I've never been in a living space that couldn't accommodate a half dozen rolls of tp at a time under a bathroom cabinet or something.

I keep my bulk pack of TP in the closet, I also prefer not to have a bunch of products visibly all over the place. But I live in a house, not an apartment.

Of course I keep my six pack of toilet paper behind my couch and the curtain hides it. That guy said his apartment looks like a stockroom, That's a bit much.

This makes absolutely no sense. As inflation has bit into the consumer, the fixed prices at dollar stores continue to serve lower income people. There is some "shrinkflation" and Dollar Tree did raise its signature price a year ago, but their entire business model cannot raise prices on the fly like every other retailer can. If you looked up dollar store corporations, you'll find they are one of the few retail segments that has been growing over the past two decades. Even when inflation isn't raging, real wages have been declining over multiple decades. Dollar stores are very much a natural consequence of the thinning out of the middle class.

There are a lot of things one can bash poor people over, but bashing them for not saving money by shopping at Costco is a bad look. And single-ply TP should be banned.

We only have 1 grocery store (Price Chopper) in town. A DG, and a just built, not even open yet FD/FT combo.

Other way around, rural spaces don't have places like local markets because of shit like dollar general.
Might depend on how rural we're talking about.

The "small town" rural place in the mid-to-northern part of my county has a Dollar Tree in the same shopping center(guess that happens a lot in my county) as a Safeway(apparently, the Safeway has been there since 1927); there's no way that dollar store could fully replace the Safeway because it's just way too small. But about 4-5 miles away is "the first layer of civilization" where there's big shopping center with Walmart, Aldi, Target, Giant Food, and a Wegnabs.

That barely qualifies as "rural" if it's only 4-5 miles, IMO. One could bike that fairly easily, depending on terrain.

I like aldi. That's my primary store. No real complaints.
There are many store brand items we have tried, that taste as cheap as the prices. We learned what to avoid over time.

I would have never given the place a shot, but our German lady friend turned us on to what kind of stuff to buy about a decade or so ago. They have a FB group that tracks all the seasonal stuff and anything else good, and shares it. My wife joined. Those items usually sell out fast.

Their meat prices tend to be higher than a warehouse club, so we just get the sausages mostly. E.G. The white Bavarian bratwurst are damned good with grilled onions and peppers. Or as part of a sheet pan bake.

And get killed on the road. I've seen the memorials. And even, a former tenant neighbor next door was such a negligent driver(by googling his name. He was likely drunk. The victim reconciled with him according to the newspaper article. Also, the "sentence" is court was much longer than the actual time served, because he was out way early).

But it is very much well water country once you deviate from that road artery. There is some density coming around, but you still tell that these new SFHs have very recently were just populated former farms and woods...and likely still operating on well water.

The return trip is an "uphill climb" because of the geology of the Piedmont Plateau.

No sidewalk on the road..

Political monopoly in my county belongs to the blues. Not that it matters, roads are a mundane budget thing....

Damascus(Where the Safeway, Dollar Tree and whole host of business are present in its little rural center. I don't even know why Advance and Carquest are so close to each in that place....) has two southern outlets. The Ridge Rd takes you to the Milestone shopping center with the Walmart, Aldi, etc. The Rt 124 outlet....eh...just goes south but there is no mega shopping center waiting you anywhere on its path(and no meaningfully useful bus service although one bus does run down it on weekdays only). But wherever you radiate out of Damascus...it's all heavy on the green....

I mean, the road has a brilliant kill count: https://www.google.com/search?q="ri...SAQMzLjaYAQCgAQHIAQTAAQE&sclient=gws-wiz-serp
