Basically I have been very busy the last 2-3 weeks and have not been in a lot of the discussions...I have my E6600 now but have no intention to install it likely for 1-2 weeks more...

That being said what I have read has basically made me feel a little disappointed....

1) the temps seem quite high but no one knows whether or not to trust any of the temp apps...

a) are the high temps legit?
b) what are the more reliable temp apps to use?
c) are the higher speed chips seeing higher temps?

2) E6600's and most the chips are not seeing the speeds the cherry picked chips before launch have....

That being said I believe now that 3.6ghz will be a tougher challenge and 4ghz is not likley to happen with air cooling alone...

You might get 4 ghz with the E6700 or E6800. The E6600 isn't looking like it's all that it was hyped to be. The E6300 and E6400, however, look pretty darn good right now, especially since they have been shown to do better on 965 boards than the E6600/E6700 (for reasons unknown to me).

If it were me, I'd go for an E6300 with as much FSB as I could muster with RAM to match.

I have no idea why the temps are getting so high, but I have a suspicion that it might be related to faulty sensors . . .

i think all your concerns are some what related to the fact that there are soooo few worthy motherboards for Duo

I think the same... don't know to trust the mobo temps.
Don't think the 6600 can hit 3.6 most of the time, 3.2-3.4 is more common.

Welcome back.

E6400 is the nu kewl.

E6600 was stillborn.

Not to say E6600s are bad, they just aren't as good of a bang for buck as the E6400s from the results i've seen.

The temps situation is messed, but only for some of us (like me with my P5B Deluxe reading scorching temps).

I'd agree with Mark.

3.2 - 3.4 GHz is all you can expect if you want it P95 etc. stable & don't want to start pumping in the volts.

However, 3.4 Ghz from an E6400 = pretty damn hawt

BTW, i'm not done OCing mine yet.

When i get some more time, i plan on getting at least 3.5 GHz.

Hey, n7 I see you got your E6400 up to 3.4GHz? Congrats. I see your board as P5B which is P965. I have an E6400 does exactly same as yours (8x425), I wanted to compare the P965 vs P975 from same brand.
What's the best timing you can get? My tightiest timing is DDR2-850 / 3-4-3. Let me know maybe we both can contribute to the forum.

Wait before discounting the E6600's. The Week 27 chips at XS are doing 3.4-3.8ghz on AIR cooling with reasonable volts. Mine does 3.42 @ 1.35v, and 3.57 at 1.43v, and I haven't pushed it further. (Mine is week 26)

Personally I'm trusting Core Temps CPU temp readings and nothing from the motherboard. My P5W DH reading is 10 degrees shy of what Core Temp is saying, but CT seems far more reasonable, given that I'm overclocking to 300FSB.

A lot of people are getting very high temps at stock speeds/Vcore. For one thing, some boards seem to supply more voltage than is needed - P5W DH supplies 1.325V by default - I lowered this to 1.225V and still managed to overclock happily (Orthos stable and everything). Plus people using the default HSF are more likely to have temperature problems. Even I had to fit my Ninja three times to get it right before I could get decent, low temperatures.

I'm loving my e6600 except that it's hotter than I thought(40C idle) but performance-wise, I have no complaints yet. I haven't OCed cuz it's already damn fast and will see how even faster it can get later when I finally OC it.

Yeah, i realized after i posted that the sarcasm implied likely didn't get across too well

Looks like the newer E6600s are doin' good.
Still not quite as great bang for buck IMO though.

Well, i'm not done yet.

Right now i'm werking longer than normal hours, so i'm not sure when i'll have time.

I need to reseat my heatsink with AS5 this time, & i plan to check the NB/SB coolers too, as your pictures & others showing the poor job Asus does with paste have me concerned a bit.

The RAM I have now is some crap RAM i am temporarily using till my Team Group comes in.
Turned out the crap RAM isn't bad at all (in OCing terms anyway), but i don't feel like pushing things farther & doing major tweaking since i won't be using it once my Team arrives anyway, & then i'll have to redo everything anyway.

You have the P5W DH, no?

Anyway, i do plan to post on my settings, etc, once i get my good RAM...& once i feel i sorta know what i'm doin' on this mobo
It's all kinda new so far.

Yeah, but look at how damn slow that guy's 3800 time is the same as the 3200 time. As pointed out by the 3200 guy, the 3800 time is slower by 5 minutes. FIVE fricking minutes!

I think later on in the thread they mention that it may be because of the RAM, 1GB vs 2GB. How? I'm not an expert so I wouldn't know if it were true or not.

Well my 6300 has been a stud. As a matter of fact I haven't seen any of the issues people have talked about.

6300
OCZ Plat 6400
DS3
Inside a Antec 1000 view case. I haven't pushed it heavily, but mine booted with no issue and I just pick a starting point of 375fsb. I tested it lightly with Orthos a couple of hours and some Episode 1 fun. I haven't had one hiccup. I set it to 1.375 for the hell of it too. Now about the temps. With the case side off, I used the easy tune for monitoring the temps. With it off my temps were 114 degrees fahrenheit for the system and at full load my temps were at 120 for the cpu. I put the case side back on which has a 80mm fan mount. I put one in and my temps dropped to 95 degrees system and 113 for the cpu at full load. At idle both system and cpu are under 89 degrees fahrenheit, with the cpu dropping around to 85 degrees. After about an hour and a half of gaming, when closed out I checked the temps right away and they were both under 100 degrees. Not bad for stock cooling and 800 mhz overclock. I would imagine it will do at 2.9-3. And its been solid. I am still using the F3 bios the board came with as well.

Verdict: C2D rocks

Most of the issues are various motherboard-related quirks. The temperature deal...meh. They don't run any hotter than X2's do when you start pushing the voltage ceiling. I think a lot of people got the idea that just because the chips are 65nm they were going to be ice cubes... Must have missed Presler.

I'm very happy with my C2D. I'm running a E6600 @ 365 = 3.28 and it's smoking fast. I do a lot of graphics intensive work and video editing. It was worth for me to spend the extra $$ for 4MB of cache.

Running it on a DS3 w/ 2GB of Corsair. Good stuff. I haven't had any problems with this setup so far.
