A dress size 12 in the 1960s was a FAR sight smaller than a size 12 today. An early 60s size 12 is roughly a size 4-6 today according to my mother.

when she was pregnant and recovering from the loss... she was slightly overweight... look at her in "Lets Make Love" ...you will notice that she was heavy for her... and for the majority of the movie... it was waist up shots... and full lenght shots were covered with shadows.

And compare her in "River of no Return" to "The Misfits"... there is a definate size difference. And b the time she made.. well, almost made "Something's Got To Give"... she was soooo inot the booze and drugs that she was practically a stick figure.. she lost all her breasts and hip curves.

but no matter what her weight was... she was a gorgeous, sexy, voluptious woman.

While it is true that most american sold clothes use a rather tilted sizing (it is called vanity sizing) I believe the "average" measurement is taken in "real" sizes. This vanity sizing is why women take so long to shop for clothes. In fact my wife ranges from a size 0 to a size 6 in regular or size 4 to a size 8 in petites! Thats a freaking large swing for one little woman.

I think the "average" measurement of a size 12 is actually what most stores refer to as a size 6 or 8 today. She was actually overweight according to the BMI and todays standards but not in a very unhealthy way.
