that is not to say Source isn't great for older HW.

source's character models & facial expressions are much better than D3/gamebyro's IMO. the doom3 engine's character models are too polygony (is that a word?) and too waxy, and gamebyro's (at least oblivon's) arent so great either. IMO HL2 is the only game that really human character models right --- im not saying the monsters and stuff in doom3/Q4 and oblivion dont look great, but the humans look like crap most of the time. even FEAR suffers from the plasticky look on their human character models.

HL2EP1 was way too short IMHO, other then that it was decent. Go back a few years and try and get No One Live Forever 2 A spy In Harms Way, that game is SO FREAKING cool. VERY origional and funny funny funny, still my all time fav PC FPS game.

D3 has fancy effects, but looks extremely fake.

HL2 doesn't have as many effects, but looks very realistic.

Just because an engine has more advanced stuff and requires more power to run, doesn't mean it comes out looking better.

Games based on the Doom 3 and Gamebyro engines (even though I think that Oblivion is the prettiest game known to man) simply use far too much texture mapping, seriously. While Source games don't look advanced as the others, I think that with the exception of Oblivion (due to scale not engine) it's the prettiest game out even after all this time.

i got it for $8.99 and still think it is a rip. OTOH, Q4 is Bargain Bin, has a REAL working flashlight [with working shadows, even] and is just more 'well-rounded' FPS. Check out my thread.

About Q4 vs. HL2E1:

I played through both games (E1 twice) and they are both great. Q4 has some cool moments and is more of a traditional FPS. On the other hand, no game outside of the half life series has the ability to take my breath away with dramatic scenes. From HL2E1 in particular, the scene where you emerge from the subway station to see City 17 wasted with striders in the background and Dr. Kleiner on the big TV instead of Breen is just amazing.

The Demo is fantastic, completely destructible terrain, even after heavy artillery the land actually deforms creating more cover for your infantry to use. You can completely destroy whole villages. The AI is absolutely incredible. Most ppl bar a few ppl who are playing it, on the Relic forums pretty much no one can win against the AI on hard or expert, and easy is damn hard on its own anyway.

The Graphics are incredible, if you do the performance test it shows you an in game cutscene which in my opinion can stand up to nearly FPS graphics standards its that amazing. Also dismemberment is on the menu , you can see troops getting blow to bits. Its really amazing, the game is coming out next week september 14th!

Get the demo now, i cannot stop playing it, normal is the furthest ive gotten and damn i can barely get past that!

Edit: Oh and HL2:EP2 you do know there will be Team Fortress 2 and Portal coming with it, for $20 thats pretty damn good value really. HL2EP2 is supposed to be 4 to 5 hours long and portal is supposed to be around that many hours too, so for $20 your getting a bloody good deal as well as getting a whole new MP game to play.

EDIT AFTER THE EDIT: Just read everything, it looks like im trying to sell these games for some reason... well actually i think CoH is that good i dont care!

UT2007 is going to be crap :! Same goes for BF2142 but Quake War has a chance of getting its prime time before its sequal turn out to be crap.

I am waiting for Bio-shock till then i am playing my old PS1 games and XBOX 360 games. also waiting for god of war 2 , FF12 , Gears of Wars and Persona and all the hyped XBOX 360, Wii , PS2 , PC games.

I was playing Flat Out 2 till i built my C2D system.

Of course, then i formatted, & i haven't put it back on yet.

So i'm playing UT2k4 as i always have been for 2 years now...
Getting tired of it though, not because of the game, but because i simply haven't gotten better, & it's frustrating as gawddamn hell that i cannot seem to get any better.

the textures and character models have have nothing to do with the respective Engines capabilities . . . it is just a matter of 'artist skill'.

Simply d/l the upgraded texture packs for Oblivion and they just blow away the Ep1 models.

Source simply LACKS ligting and shadows. . . turn on that crappy flashlight in Ep1 . . . the reason it is so dull is so that you don't notice it casts NO shadows that INTERACT with anything ELSE.

to CONTRAST, light up a torch in an Oblivion cave. . . . it's shadows dance around interacting with the shadows and lighting from OTHER sources . . . very realistic in contrast to Source fixed lighting.

And don't confuse plasticky-looking indoor D3 with Q4 . . . it is everything D3 should have been. . . . including better 'horror'.

and flyboy84, i really liked Hl2 . . . i just thought Ep1 - for 19.99 - was 4-5 hours of garbage - silly puzzles, linear beyond belief, and just ONE weapon for much of it . . . plus that crappy flashlight was more irritating than useful.
