Do you live in the DC area? I'm thinking about making the move out there. I've visited, and it was nice as a tourist, but I worry about the day to day grind. The Metro was... interesting.

Yeah I live about 5 or so miles north of DC. At that job I mentioned where the contract was lost, I used to take the Metro to work from MD to VA every day. it was not bad since the station was literally across the street from my apartment building, and I didn't even have to go above ground at my destination. But now a days I don't think I could take the Metro daily, it's just such a clusterfuck and the prices are even higher now than when I took it.

As for DC I personally could never live there. I'm just not into city living, too busy for me. I rarely go into DC and dread when I have to now solely due to traffic. I cannot stand driving down there. Uber has made it better though since I can Metro anywhere then Uber to the destination if the Metro doesn't go right there. Sometimes I have to Uber back though if it's too late, the Metro doesn't run until 3am anymore on weekends like it used to.

Everywhere around here is pretty expensive compared to other parts of the country for sure, but some are way more expensive or cheaper than others. Not sure what you're looking to spend on a house though.

I was looking at possible jobs out in San Diego because I'd love to live there, but the jobs out there aren't even paying as high as jobs around here, and the cost of living out there is like 1.5-2x what it is around. No chance I'd move somewhere else making a lower salary than I make now, when the COL is more.

Computer Science. And no I'm not a manager or a tech lead, my title is Senior Software Architect but my duties are pretty much just what a senior dev does. I have 12 years experience in the industry at this point, I turn 35 right after November.

I don't think I ever want to be a manager. I would be a tech lead but only if I get to be hands on, I'd hate to be in meetings and not doing development. I'm also the CTO of a startup but right now the company is worth $0 lol.

^ I'm mostly done with city living, but there are places I could still do it. I would love to live in Chicago again--not sure why, honestly, but it remains a fantastic place for me. DC I actually like but don't really visit regularly. It kinda reminds of home, but much more of a city obviously. I find driving in the city--although confusing and infuriating--a bit easier than getting there, because I have to deal with these Maryland psychopaths on the road.

SF, I could never live there. Hate that city. Love the other side of the bay, though. East Bay is he only place over there with some culture and personality remaining, but the Valley is quickly encroaching and it will all eventually be sterile and soulless.

CoL is pretty crazy here. I find it to be only slightly cheaper than in the Bay Area, which is actually compensated for by the fact that the food access here is terrible. Great restaurants here, too--but comparatively more expensive for a midrange-to-semi-fancy experience, and the grocery options are just garbage compared to CA. :\

But I think you could easily buy a place around DC and live comfortably for WELL under $150k salary. I guess it depends on your lifestyle and your ability to balance needs and wants.

Pay inflation is a big thing too. I started out 12 years ago in my industry making $10/hr. They're paying new analysts close to $40K now.

LOL no I'm actually really good at my job which is why I get paid a lot for it. And the company is awesome and I've never worked over 40 hours a week since I started there 4 years ago.

First job out of school was software engineer and I made $48k. After 5.5 years at that company when I left I was making $62k.

I completed my dentistry degree last year and now I'm in my 1st year internship with this shitty nhs funded dental company this is kinda compulsory for me because I need experience no matter what. I am earning 15k sterlings right now and after my internship I should be earning around 20k+ sterlings or even less I'm not getting my hopes up because I am thinking about moving back to my home town Sweden but I can gaurentee to earn 20k+ if I stay in the UK but ofc I need to rent a student house again or rent a house/flat if I have enough savings but that is unrealistic right now I am only 23 years old and struggling with money at the momment. You probally ask why the hell am I earning 20k with a dentistry degree. You tell me lol. Most likely because I have no solid real life experience in real life hence why Im doing an intership.

My freind owns a chinese takeaway in the UK and apprently he said he makes around 70k/year sterlings i am jelly he dont have degree he just took over the family buisness lmao. He does drive a 2014 plate land rover doe >_<

I just applied myself from the listing in a newspaper. And $48k is a pretty low-to-average entry salary for software engineer but I just took what I could get because I had no real world experience in the industry.
