So what do you get from overclocking anyway?

My Duron 600 was purring along at 900 Mhz crunching 3.16 Mkeys/sec, when I said to myself... "Self? I said... why not load that BIOS upgrade for the K7V Pro2 and see if you can get that last 50 Mhz out of it."

I did that... and at 1.825 volts it's doing 950 Mhz now. What did that get me?
well.... 200,000 Keys/sec increase. That may not seem like much, but it's a .0632917 increase in speed.

If TA as a whole could tweak just 6% more out of our machines, we'd have crunched an additional 87,000 blocks yesterday. (the equivalent of a good-sized mini-team)

[edit] an afterthought:
This processor is part of my crack-rack, and therefore not subject to any interference from other programs. It is running Klinux.

Marketsons1985,
I suggest doing what manyy of us did/do, and that is by doing some research. Check out some of the technical sites out there, some of the links, and post questions here on this forum or on some of the other forums, do searchs on Overclocking at Yahoo, Google, etc.

To get you started, here is one guide at SysOpt:
SysOpt Overclocking Guide

Danc,
I've been trying to get my Cely466 to OC to 525, but it keeps locking up, so no go yet. Based on some tests, I either have some flakey memory, or I need a better heatsink/fan combo on it, or both.

I do have a Compaq Proliant dual PPro180@200Mhz, several P75@100, and anything else I can get my hands on and OC, and now my daughters PC has passed the burn-in period, I think I will see if that Cey300A can get up to 450 or 464.

Too bad I don't have the bucks right now for a Duron or T-Bird setup. Any spare $ will be going to my hospital stay, as well as the wife needs a new car. *sigh*

I just got a week-51 blue core 1000MHz Tbird. Looking at it right now. It's...a thing of beauty.

I'm too busy to upgrade in the next couple of weeks so I'll buy the MSI K7T Pro Turbo-R instead of the Pro2-A. I hope that my Arctic Silver, FOP32-1, Enermax EG-351P-VE and clean-wired case will allow me to reach 1.2GHz with this baby. I'm also replacing my front intake fan.

Then I'll crack like there's no tomorrow.

BTW, I'm selling my Celeron 500 + P3B-F to an acquaintance who will keep it happily cracking 24/7 and producing its daily 350-450 blocks, currently in 12th place on the Borg proxy.

DanC -

My PIII 850 at $259.99 is not cheap to me!! :|

Duron 600's are. You didn't bother to read the edit below before you 'frownie-faced' me.

u won't gain any speed in rc5 with a faster FSB. It's best to just get the fastest CPU speed possible. But if that means using a faster FSB, by all means do it.

Dan C,

My herd is OC as much as possible and stay stable. 3 boxes do nothing but crack 24/7.

I'm sure most of us are already maxed out. My Duron 600@935 won't go any higher. If I could increase it, of course I would. If my assumption is correct (that most of us are running OC'ed comps), why are we losing so badlly?

Because the DPC out number us 2:1 & we aren't the only ones who overclock.

Actually, I could easily increase my output by 6% just by uninstalling UT on the Duron. I am playing waaaaaaay too much of it.

I have a dual-Celeron system that has been overclocked from 400MHz x 2 to 552MHz x 2, which is about all it can handle even with Alpha6035's and a lapping job. The kicker is, it's reached approximately 9 weeks of uptime running Win2kPro. Anyone else got some good uptime for the record books? I know there are people with more than 9 weeks among us, Slahr Dzhe and Wolfie being two of them.

Max uptime for is 3-4 days. After that janitor, also known as wife, turns my comps off

Just oc'd the girlfriends CII600. Was running at 900, it is now at 999MHz @ 1.8V on a CUSL2 and cooled by a Globalwin FOP32. It has been stable for the last couple of hours. I will try for more when I am happy it is stable.

I will be overclocking my system (dual PIII700@1000) further when I have sorted my new watercooler out. Both these 700's hit 1084Mhz in the VP6. It is a bit of a bummer as the VP6 only gives 1.85V max....both of these 700's will hit 1120MHz (160fsb) individually in the CUSL2, but need 1.9V :|

BTW, I had my best day ever yesterday!! - 2678Blocks @ 8.32MK/s

In my personal herd, I have 2 633's, 2 366's, and a 700 or a non overclocked total of 1998 Mhz. They are overclocked to a total of 3667 Mhz, a net gain of 1669 Mhz--that results in about 1502 WU's per day increase. Not too shabby for clicking a couple of options in BIOS.

I have been overclocking since I got a Celeron 266 (cacheless) and ran it at 400 for a long time. Now I have 3 PIII 650's oc'd to 866, a PIII 500 (512K cache) running at 566, a Celeron 566 at 850, and an AMD K6-2 350 runnning at 400. All the systems are rock steady.

So what do you get? More horsepower for the money.

Overclocking? I thought everybody who had taken the cover off their case had done that and was applying extra cooling fans.

Unfortunately, I'm not blessed with many overclockable chips around me. I have a P3-600 (Katmai) which will do 672MHz, but UT crashes, so that's a no-go (needs better HS/Fan, but is it worth it? No.)

For those who may have misinterpreted my original message - it was merely an observation of what *could* happen without any recruiting... in no way was it meant to suggest that EVERY processor on earth should be overclocked.

My main PC is an straight-up Athlon 700 not OC'd. I only OC crack-rack processors. It is fun to see what you can get out of them though. Dollar for dollar, it's tough to beat the Duron.

MechBgon,
Nothing for the record books yet, but I have a P200 (Win2KPro) running the DNET client, a perproxy, and a stats proggy, uptime is 51 days:

Summary: 6374 RC5 packets (11587*2^28 keys)
51:15:46:52:03 - [696.87 kkeys/s]

Not too bad for a Windows distro.

I may have several work PCs or servers that have been up longer, I will have to check when I return to work.

Admirable indeed.
Russ has nodes that have been running continuously for over 70,000 blocks without shutdown.

I wonder what the record is?

Last weekend, I put together and OC'd a Duron 700, currently running at 945 stable (105 x 9 @1.8V). I'm getting 3.32MKeys/sec off this one system. I'm hoping to get it to 1Ghz... (crossing fingers). I'm also OC'ing a P3 600 to 800 @default voltage, and may try for higher.

Regarding uptimes, my original cracker running NetBSD currently has a 145 day uptime (which is about 20 weeks or a bit over 5 months). Another cracker (a 486) running Linux has an uptime of 151 days (21 weeks or almost 5 1/2 months). My longest uptime is a little notebook running linux (not cracking but crunching), that's been running for 178 days (25 weeks or almost 6 1/2 months).

I just overclocked my c633 that was running at 650 up to 950. Had to bump the voltage up to 1.9v. Do you think this is too high. Have a golden orb on the chip and motherboard monitor shows a cpu temp of 114 with the dnet client running.
