Only thing I want is a $300 PS4 Battlefront bundle. Failing that, a sub $300 nathan drake PS4 like what Target had when they were going for $240 with the marriage registry coupon glitch. So far though the only PS4's I'm seeing at the $300 range on BF are ND collection. I'm not harboring much hope for Star Wars...

I ended up ordering a Toshiba 40L310U (39.5"), one of yesterday's daily deals at Best Buy, for $200 (plus tax, but FS.) It is dumb, but it's neither "high end" nor even a recent model (in fact, I think it was recently discontinued* nor is it 120 Hz.

Congrats on the purchase, that's quite the upgrade! I honestly don't know what the hype is with 120Hz. I bought an Samsung LED a long time ago (like 10 years) and it was one of the first 1080p models. It's only 60Hz and the picture is still amazing and I love it. I've had zero issues watching sports and gaming on it over the years. I've had friends move to the 120Hz and 240Hz LEDs and they have the "soap opera" effect, which I absolutely hate. (Some models let you disable it, which helps some channels look better, and others worse.) With my 60Hz I've never had to worry about it.

One thing you'll have to consider, if you haven't already, is now you'll need an HD source going to the TV. SD channels look "ok" on a regular tube tv, but stretched out on an HD screen don't look the best, which can be disappointing to see on a new TV. Make sure you run a proper HD signal to make the best of the new screen!

Yeah, it certainly is. I'm pretty used to watching HDTV at family members'/friends' homes, so I don't think it'll be too big of a shock. On the contrary, between having gotten used to higher resolution monitors elsewhere (including even just tablet and phone screens), the aging of the CRT TV, not to mention the aging of my eyes, it had gotten to the point where I could barely stand watching the CRT anymore. But I don't watch TV all that much anyway and had moved a year or so ago, and between one thing and the other, just hadn't gotten around to getting a new one yet...

I'm not even sure I've watched a 120 Hz set. When I said earlier I wanted one, it was on the general assumption that it would be better for "action" action, etc. not based on my own actual experience, and I'd never even heard of the effect you mention. Having just Googled it, it doesn't sound very pleasant... but in any event, I suspect that I'll be so happy with "any old" high resolution, compared to the (old, not-high-end) CRT TV I've been living with, that it could be fairly crappy as HDTVs go and I'll still be happy with it for a while, at least. And at that price, replacing it in a couple of years won't be a big deal...

I hadn't in fact given that any thought, but I do have a standard cable package that, as far as I know, has whatever "standard" HD channels are available in my service area. Guess I'll see for sure once I get around to unboxing it and hooking it up. It actually arrived today, a day early, but I'm still planning to not even open the outer box at least until after Cyber Monday, to save the potential hassle of re-packing it if a better deal shows up between now and then, or even beyond, depending on how patient I can be... (BB extended their return period through mid-January, so I have some time to shop around.)

Socks.

Seriously. I haven't bought good socks in year. When the f'k did good wool socks become $15-$20 a pair?

Probably hard drives. I had like 4 of my backup drives die on me the last time I ran a cold backup job, it's time to add new ones into the rotation. I also need to grow one of my raid 10 arrays so probably will grab 2 3TB drives to do that with.

I recently got a new front window and patio door, and will be getting fancy blinds to go with it, so I'll be in the hole till I pay that off, so I may actually skip the hard drives unless a REALLY good deal pops up.

Might also take the chance and wait till boxing day, there's often good deals then too.

Surface Pro 4--guessing that is highly unlikely?

--honestly, I just might max out my 10% cash back from Amazon and Chase Freedom with a Surface.

:hmm:

Yeah, I dunno what's going on either, but it's terrible. I was dumbstruck when I saw a pair of even 80% wool "boot socks" (the only "wool blend" they had that was actually more than 10-20% wool!) priced at $9.99 even at TJ Maxx. I had to go home and google it before I was wiling to believe it was a discounted price. Fortunately, it rarely gets even close to bitterly cold here in NYC, so I don't need them all that often...

Alright who let the Canadian in here.

Our retailers pretty much caved and started doing Black Friday too now. I did end up buying 2 3TB hard drives for $333 total. I had been wanting a few HDDs for backups anyway, was pretty much waiting till they go on sale. I also need 2 3TB drives (but better than seagate) to expand one of my raid 10 arrays. I'll have to wait and see what Boxing Day brings.

I was hoping for a better deal but got the $300 Amazon Nathan Drake sale with 10% off from Chase Freedom.

Looking for motherboard for an i7-4790K (but not planning to OC), graphics card (probably R3 390) and ~4TB HDD for anew gaming build.

I wasn't looking for a new monitor, but that Dell 34" wide screen IPS has been very tempting.

We had a very fortunate and unplanned score this weekend.

Mom was visiting for the holiday and in need (for the last 2 years, really) of a new laptop. After searching through the Amazon and BBuy online deals a day before Black Friday, failing to find anything that we could decide on, we planned to head out Saturday to Best Buy to try out some models and see what she would want (we were doing Thanksgiving on Friday)

ambled into BBuy by 11:30, few people around, saw some open box/display ultrabooks and 2-in-1s still on display shelf with the black Friday 20% off listed, open box price. After trying these out, comparing specs with some in-store googling (I am not that familiar with recent Pentium or Celeron die numbers), we settled on this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IQEA8UE?keywords=yoga 2 11&qid=1448888210&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Open box, listed at $303, without power cable or anything. While confirming that it is what it was, the girlfriend noticed some random Best Buy box in the corner, opened the box, and found the very same Yoga2, completely new, untouched and with power cable and dust case, but without it's own box. So, we grabbed that one instead.

Brand new, $202 out the door. Thanks, Black Friday chumps.

Was anyone else not particularly impressed by Black Friday this year? Didn't seem like there were as many really good deals as in most years.

Hmm, not bad, but is she able to deal with the Pentium N-series CPU? (Atom)

Her current laptop might be faster. Then again, I'm sure that one is much more convenient.

(I use an N2830 laptop, and it's not too bad.)

Her current laptop is about 6 years old and rendered almost entirely useless by her friend installing horrible malware-in-guise-of-antivirus some years ago.

So, anything that doesn't take 5 minutes to start up and 1 minute to load a webpage is a major upgrade.
