Like making drugs or something along those lines. Not that I want to make drugs, I'm just a very curious person. I always see these stupid people on COPS getting busted and I'm very curious to know how hard it is to make. But I don't want my curiosity to get me a visit from the sheriff either.

So what happens if you search for that kind of stuff?

You notice that your cat/dog suddenly has a new collar (with built in video feed to a nondescript van parked on the side of the road, across from your house), you get interference on your stereo (due to the radio frequencies of the bugs they planted), and your neighbors all look at your like :hmm:

I doubt that unless you are a "terrorist" they can do anything. I mean, if they do that they are OBVIOUSLY ratting on themselves by saying "HEY! Were totally spying on you and everything you do!!!"

When I was building my grow room I asked MANY questions about growing weed...which in my state is illegal...and I havent had anyone knocking on my door or anything.

I would say that you should be able to comfortably search for near anything besides "How to build you own IED" or "How to take foreign news reporters hostage"...

Good new for you you just set off a half dozen alarms in either a CIA or FBI facility due to the words you wrote.
Sorry.

Supposedly an underground facility in Omaha routs all internets traffic through it's filters.

The NSA (National Security Agency-the one no one talks about) is tasked with domestic & international electronic data gathering.

I thought they weren't supposed to gather data on American citizens though?

How the !@#$ would something monitor that much data?
And where are they getting the bandwidth for that.

umm...they definitely monitor all inbound/outbound international calls and search for "keywords". It would be much easier to search text than voice...so its 100% possible. Its just that they are not supposed to use that technology on us citizens.

You'd have to be doing a lot of serious crap or found the secret to one of the codename words/discussions that they have.

Maybe if you become a suspicious target within all that bandwidth and you make it into the 1% of the earth that does make it there..

Your net details get traced and you get watched on satellite for your every movement. Reminds me of those UAV videos they have of insurgents.

My semi-educated guess:

If you search for those things your activity will be flagged, an NSA agent will take a quick look, and as soon as he realizes that the searches do not represent a credible threat (which should take all of two seconds) he will move on.

If you develop a pattern (i.e. repetitive searches coinciding with international phone traffic and a passport application) you may warrant a closer look.

The NSA just doesn't have the resources to park a van outside the house of every dude that runs a search on IEDs or dirty bombs.

Seeing as "how to make a bomb" comes in before "how to make a business plan" on Google auto complete... I think you will be OK

Considering the economy, I would expect "how to make a bungalow out of a shipping crate" to come before "how to make a business plan"

There's nothing wrong with learning and being curious.

Now... In the context of child porn, it's different, because a child was hurt in the process.

There's nothing illegal about reading and studying diagrams, though.
