I want a laptop that can hold its own in gaming, although I don't play a lot of first-person shooters so I don't need something uber powerful. Looking to stay around (or less than) the $1,000 price range, but will go over a bit if I get a lot more for a bit more cash.

I was looking at something like this - I *really* like the touchscreen capability. Seems like this is the best of both a notebook and tablet.

Thoughts?

Thanks for any help!

Well, under $1000 you better get the Y510p 755M SLI I5 if you want to squeeze the most gaming performance for the money. The 755M SLI will be faster than a GTX 770M

Other options available too, but touchscreen won't be common - Asus N550JV and Acer V7-482PG have it but with a much lower gaming performance

What kind of games are you looking to play (obviously, you said not FPS)? At around the same price, the Lenovo 510p with the GT755M will give you about a 50% frame rate boost, but at the price of less portability. Adding another couple hundred bucks for the GT750M SLI model will add another 50%, but will take more energy and has no optical drive.

This model also lacks touch, unfortunately.

Edit: Someone beat my to it.

Thanks fellas. Really real time strategy games is what I like - about to buy Company of Heroes 2, for example.

Thinking about it some more, I *REALLY* want a touch screen, but one that is adequete for gaming and as nice a screen as possible. Any thoughts on what some of the good touch screen laptops out there also decent for gaming?

Thanks again!

That's definitely not a gaming laptop.

Low end video card + ultra low voltage dual core i7 which runs about 1GHz slower than the "regular" laptop i7s.

The lenovo y510p is gonna be pretty hard to beat, unless you can find one with a i7 quad core which will probably have a slower GPU (under $1000).

Unfortunately, I don't think touch screen + gaming is going to be an option for a sub $1000 laptop.

Thanks nwo. If I was willing to go up in price by a few hundred dollars, any particular gaming notebook that also has touch screen that you would recommend?

Thanks!

Man, the more I look at it the touch screen and gaming seem to be aimed at two different things and not really all that compatable. So I'll probably get a gaming one and then a seperate touch screen one.

So for gaming I'll probably get that Y50P - looks like a great deal. What particular model should I get? I'll buy from amazon so if anyone sees it on there and can link it that would be great!

Then I'll probably just get a cheapie touch screen - any recommendations here?

Thanks!

the one that I linked to - Y510p 755M SLI I5 version for $900

You might want to wait for the upcoming Y50 in two months - should be around the same price + 1080p IPS

So that leaves the touchscreen that I will buy and not care about for gaming - anyones in particular to recommend? Probably just want to spend $300 - $500 on one.

Thanks!

Get a tablet. A Bay Trail one if you want Windows, though the Nexus 7 will do you well if you're OK with Android.

Salty,

Why do you want a touchscreen? I have a Dell Inspiron 14R touchscreen and I never EVER use the touchscreen. I think it's more of a gimmick then a positive feature.

It's just your way. Me, I have a T100 and I use touchscreen ALL the time. When I' typing, it's faster to just use fingers than to go for a mouse. Everything about W8 is asking for a touch, for good or for bad.

So is the Y50 the one to get these days for a mid-range gaming laptop? Want to pull the trigger on one soon. Thanks!

Notebookcheck does very good laptop reviews.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y50-Notebook-Review.120215.0.html

The y50 is definitely a budget notebook. The screen is mediocre, low contrast and poor colour space.

The boost on the CPU doesn't seem to work and it remains at base, 2.4 ghz clocks (5.3 vs. 6.9 expected points on CB 11.5).

The surface gets quite hot.

Seems pretty mediorce. I'd look around a little more.

Thanks.

Do you still need one? I have some questions:

1 - Do you need windows purchased on it?
2 - 15" or 17"?
3 - What's the most demanding games you will play?
4 - Will you be willing to install custom vBIOSes for better/more stable GPU performance depending on the machine?
5 - Will you be willing to go with a manufacturer you've probably never heard of before, though I can 100% vouch for them being good?
6 - Is it $1000 or $1200 limit for price? Or more correctly, what's the maximum you are willing to pay (not $0.01 more)?
7 - How long do you wish the warranty to be?
8 - Would you be willing to take a non-touch-screen machine? Midrange-high end laptops do not usually come with them.
