Oh god, I forgot about that game. My roomates and I played it for a full day before throwing the damn game against a wall, it was so frustrating.

Master Blaster was the toughest for me.

Ditto. Only NES game that I owned but never beat. It was insanely hard.

Subspace. There was NOTHING more frustrating than greening up a good ship and being in a great 1 on 1 fight with someone in a corner of the zone and having some cloaker kill you out of nowhere. Then respawning and having the same guy kill you when you're a neg and can't escape.

Haven't felt this way about subspace in several years, but the game remarkably is still alive.

 

i could get to the end of BLASTER MASTER, but never beat it.
many NES consoles have been destroyed in the effort.

i even ruined the game itself at one point (then i went and rented it, and returned my non-functioning cartridge)

i'm going to toss in an honourable mention for Wonder Boy 1 on the SMS.

in the later levels, there were some jumps that you had to make on icy surfaces. 9 times out of 10 you'd fall. :|

figuring out the patterns to beat the bosses in Black Belt sucked too.

we used a game genie to give us infinite lives (really it just made the life counter go up as high as memory allowed), and we were almost out of lives by the time we beat the last boss

I'm amazed so many people posted "Blaster Master".

Loved that game when I was a kid and beat it quite a few times, though I'll grant the lack of a save function/limited continues was a bitch.

Admittedly, I probably only managed to beat it because I had the Max controller with the turbo button (can we say "turbo grenades?"), not to mention the cheap-shot trick you could do to beat some of the bosses (grenade them, then pause the game for about a minute; the boss takes damage from your grenade while the game is paused). The controller also helped immensely in maneuvering at the end against the final boss.

Fun game, though. Loved the upgrades you got to your tank after each boss.

As far as most frustrating game ever: I'll go with Super Mario Sunshine. Uuuuuuggggghhhhh. Sheer stubbornness was the only thing that made me finish that game, despite the numerous levels with the obstacle courses, not to mention the stupid "clean up the beach in 3 minutes" level.

Edit: Any of the SimCity games I ever played. Maybe I'm just stupid, but I never got the hang of making money in any of them. Always ended up starting over.

Ikaruga isn't too bad after you start memorizing the patterns.
Sunshine wasn't hard, just a bit tedious.

You can add up another vote for the Ghouls and Ghosts series for me, (Genesis, SNES, NES, they were all fscking hard).
