I think it's more frustrating that I had to quit at the last friggin' level as compared to not being able to pass the first few . . ..

The important part here is that when you get to the large door the opens on the crater, have your sniper rifle ready, and lie flat + turn on infravision when you open the door. You should be able to snipe at least 2 of the 3 jumping machine-gunner dudes (you can get all 3 before the rocket-launcher guys reach you). Then you can just run around the crater dodging missiles and shooting for the head without having to worry about getting machine-gunned.

Splatterhouse 2 for the mega drive. Your character is slow and crap, and the end boss is practically unbeatable, the giant squid before the end guy is pretty tough too.

I never see Guardian Legend (NES) mentioned in these types of threads, but I got SO frustrated with that game. I could never get by the lobster boss (I forget which corridor that was - must have been the fifth or sixth).

NetHack. One of the few RPG/slashers with permanent death. So you could have 100 hours on your character, get hit by a cockatrice without having a can of lizard meat in your pack, and your character is dead. You have to start a new level 1.

Pretty frustrating to say the least, but also the key to the game's fun factor.

Really? I did. Multiple times. Without any guides.

It didn't seem bad. No cheats either.

Although I do believe I used the 'codes' as save points.

Been a LONG time, I don't know that I could still do it, but, probably, if I had time.

Love that game, and have beaten it all the way through. Are you aware of the password TGL? Anyway, the trick to beating the lobster boss is to not move side to side, but stay still and keep using your fireball. Pretty much the only useful special weapon.

I'd also like to nominate Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny. Loved the original game, but this game was beyond frustrating.

lol, what parts? That game was awesome, but it did have some annoying puzzles. For me, planting the silverleaf plant underneath a glass pyramid to release a fireball which causes a door to open was the worst offender. Overall it could be pretty fun, however.

Pretty much the entire game (well... I got to the city portion about 2/3s of the way through the game and gave up after that).

- The #&($@&#@* spider in the hive caves (where you find the little girl's bones). That thing was ridiculously difficult to kill and that wasn't even that far into the game.

- The constant uncontrollable shape-changing (until you get the charm from Dawn). Can you say "annoying as hell"?

- The Ruloi in the Citadel. The most fscking frustrating fights ever. Chasing those little bastards around just to get close enough to hit one, much less avoid getting zapped by their magic that you can't really dodge or avoid just about did it for me.

- The constant flood of spiders in the temple that prevents you from doing ANYTHING without being swarmed by them.

- The bug at the beginning of the temple that forced me to restart the entire game. (At the very beginning of the temple area, there's an altar with two bowls you have to fill in order to solve a puzzle. Clicking on one of the bowls triggered a bug that made an aloe leaf appear there and you couldn't get rid of it nor put your own aloe leaf in, preventing you from progressing further. Stupid me saved the game after I did this, not realizing it was a bug and only later found that out.)

Been playing the original Lands of Lore recently (thanks to the wonder of DosBox) and it reminded me how much the sequel sucked compared to the original.

The Time Machine

You wander around trying to figure out what exactly it is you are supposed to be doing in this "richly rendered" world. Eventually you just go back to blowing people up in Doom. Doom I understand; The Time Machine I don't.

Also Myst Exile. The puzzles were often not based on anything but grunt trial and error, boring. In the original Myst and Riven the puzzles were based on physical principles so you didn't have to just keep clicking stuff, running to see what happened, then try again and again (except for the stupid subway in Myst, god help you if you can't draw a map as you go).

Oh man I just remembered another old school one ...

Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?

God that game on the old apple computers in my school when I was in like 5th grade ... man oh man, it was just impossible, and once you thought you had her, it was a damn henchman! I don't think I ever caught her

If you catch enough criminals, you *do* eventually nab Carmen herself. I did it several times (not many games on the school computers).

Spoilers ahead!

1. There were only a three spiders IIRC. There was the multi-mouthed Executioner near the girl's corpse, there was another on one of the elevator floors, and there was a green one at the bottom of the pit.

2. The only times that it got on my nerves was when you were just about to get into a lizard cave and find some cool goodies, and then all of the sudden you turn into a human and get squashed. Otherwise, it never seemed to matter. The lizard is uber and the beast is great against fighting those two-headed tigers, and you get the Dampen charm in the Huline Jungle anyways.

3. Oh yes, those flying bastards. What really sucks is when they summon those instant-death pillars right on top of you. The way to kill them is with that golden halberd. It gives a lot of defence and does just enough damage to kill one in a single whack.

4. That part was pretty annoying as well. The trick is to kill the Wild Ones and get the green shard off of the shaman. Then you can get the other shard from that swimming pool and skip the spiders entirely.

5. Yeah, that bug is pretty bad, and the game does have quite a few areas that can potentially ruin your game. I always end up having to keep a couple dozen back up saves just in case.
