Maybe I should just get myself one of those homemade beer kits.

I'm looking for a beer that really tastes strong.

Right now I drink St. Pauli Girl and Samuel Adams Boston Lager. I like these a lot but St. Pauli is a bit weak on flavor. Not weak like Bud but slightly less flavor than I'd like.

I guess I like the taste of lagers.

So what's a really strong lager that you've tried and liked? WHat brands are good that you can really taste the hops?

Hoppy beer? Don't go with a lager.

Stone Arrogant Bastard, Pliny the Elder, Hoptimum... All hoppy. Not lagers.

There are hoppy lagers. They are usually pilsners from Germany or Czech republic. Paulaner Pilsner, pilsner urquell, etc

IPA is a hoppy style, for general reference.

Thanks I'll try some IPAs I haven't tried any yet.

Second, Pliny the Elder
Stone Ruination
Samuel Adams Latitude 48

Thanks for those suggestions. Sam Adams Latitude 48 sounds interesting since I already like their Boston Lager. I just want a stronger beer to stand up to stronger tasting foods.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute
Dale's Pale Ale
Sierra Nevada Torpedo

I've heard a lot of good reviews of Dogfish Head so I've got to try that next.

So many great suggestions, thanks for those everyone.

Lagunitas A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale

One of my favorite beers right now, and I'm on a bit of a hops kick.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #43 (Aug 2010):

Hoppy wheat is what the beer geeks are callin' for. This beer has a thick, wheat-induced head and clear, pale amber color. It has some sweet breadiness underneath a big tide of hop aroma. It's super smooth and easy to drink. It has a thick flavor of soft, floral and fruity hops, and the bitterness is there, but nothing too sharp--more like dried grass or tobacco. This beer has a bit of a snappy, dry malt character and is faintly yeasty with some warming esters. The hops stay on the palate far into the aftertaste. This one has it all figured out--an amazing ale.

You might want to try a good IPA before you write off ales altogether. You might also want to try some ales with more body just to see if they strike your fancy. Start with an ESB and work your way down to a brown ale, porter, and/or stout. Also throw in a belgian tripel or quad.

Is hoppy beer very bitter?

Yes. But good hoppy beers have a balance of flavors. Not just bitter.

OP: you may want to take it easy with the hops at first. It's often an acquired taste. Try something like a Stone Pale Ale rather than jumping into a Ruination if you haven't had much hoppy stuff.

Hoppy? Then simply drink the beer that uses excess hop- Indian Pale Ale.

The brits used extra hop as a preservative when they shipped beer across to India.

If it's in your area, Redhook ESB. Hoppy, but a very smooth finish, no real aftertaste (which is why I dislike IPAs.)
