when is this hop fad going to end? i don't understand how people can enjoy drinking something that tastes so terrible. i'm only angry about this because i'm waiting my turn for everyone and their brother to focus on producing a good weissbier. even imports don't taste the same as from the tap in germany.

Hmm that's brewed right here in my state. Will have to give that a try also. Thanks.

thats cool. their brewery is basically in my backyard. the hoptical illusion IPA is very hoppy and kind of like a beginner beer as far as IPAs are concerned. It shouldn't be too hard to find either since most stores carry blue point beverages. Just like others said, an IPA is an acquired taste.

Maybe I should just get myself one of those homemade beer kits.

I'm looking for a beer that really tastes strong.

Right now I drink St. Pauli Girl and Samuel Adams Boston Lager. I like these a lot but St. Pauli is a bit weak on flavor. Not weak like Bud but slightly less flavor than I'd like.

I guess I like the taste of lagers.

So what's a really strong lager that you've tried and liked? WHat brands are good that you can really taste the hops?

Don't confuse hoppy with strong. Beer can be strong in many different ways. ABV, Bitterness, Hop aroma, malt flavors, hop flavors, and malt aroma.

What are the characteristics in the beer that you like? Is it the clean taste, the bitterness, the 'flavor', the smell?

Eh, is it really a fad anymore? Yes, it's popular, but I rarely find it requested compared to any other beer styles. From everything I've been reading, as craft breweries try to figure out how to increase their consumer base and longevity, session ales are going to become the next big market fad. Cost + time + drinkability are what's spearheading it - not everyone wants to drink 4-5 higher ABV (6%+) beers while watching football. Luckily weissbier is one of those styles that can be done as a session, so maybe you'll see something come out. http://beeradvocate.com/lists/style/87

flying dog - double dog ale. at 11.5% abv, many hops.

Uh, ABV and IBU do not go hand in hand, and hops contribute nothing to ABV.

Currently available - Sierra Nevada Celebration ale, usually until late January or so

Mendocino's White Hawk hasn't been mentioned, really good IPA I think.
I really like Lagunitas Censored/Kronik. It's a red, not as hoppy as IPA's, but more than the lagers mentioned.

There are some 'black lagers' out there that are worth a try.

Already mentioned:
The Dogfish Head IPA's are quite nice but spendy.
Sierra Nevada Torpedo, bit more of a 'piney' taste.
Almost anything from Stone.

please tell me where I claimed they did? hops can be used cover a high alcohol content.

In the old days old style LECH.

I think you need to make your own. Once you start playing with finishing hops you will not be able to stop. In my experience a bad lot of home brew is better than almost anything you can buy.

From the phrase, "...at 11.5% abv, many hops." implies that the hops contribute to the high alcohol content. I didn't want the OP to think that high ABV implies high bitterness. Besides, as much as I like hops, I've never found it to absolutely cover up alcohol - look at a beer like Dogfish 120 or any decent barleywine. IBU vs. OG is what correlates the actual bitterness, so higher ABV beers have higher IBU to balance them, not necessarily make them more bitter.

Here's a discussion on correlation between high IBU beers with high ABV. http://community.mrbeer.com/forum/1...681-why-do-high-abvs-12-seem-to-have-high-ibu

He did leave out an "and", but I don't think that was deliberate.

No worries, like I said, I just didn't want the OP to be confused, that's all. I wasn't intentionally trying to insult rdubbz.
