As far as Ales go,

As many others have said, IPAs are the way to go if you want hoppy.
Otherwise, a good russian imperial stout will be quite hoppy too, but, will have very very different flavor obviously.

Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA & Founders Devil Dancer .. these are my 2 favorite 'strong' IPAs. They are a lot more bitter than most other IPAs, if you love bitter, these are great.


That said, if you're not exposed to IPAs, I'd shoot for something less than 80 IBUs and under 8% ABV as they are a lot more accessible and agreeable.


As far as stouts go, Have you had plain old regular Guinness? If you like it, but think it's too watered down, stouts are for you, If you don't care for it because it's too strong, then, not for you....

Madison, WI. Grew up in EL & went to school in AA.

You know the beer is amazing when it's brewed in MI and served at the UW-Madison Union...In fact, I think I'll have a Two Hearted right now.

I think you should ease into IPAs. Go for regular pale ales first. I tried a Bell's Two Hearted after hearing people rave about how great it was, not knowing that it would taste like a glass full of pine sap. Since then I've hated IPAs and have only tried them a few times.

I had one a couple weeks ago that wasn't terrible. Unfortunately I don't remember what it was called. It was still hoppy, but less bitter than what I had had before. I've had Torpedo and Ranger and couldn't have more than 1-2 sips.

Personally I like brown ales, porters, and stouts myself. Stuff with lots of rich, dark flavors like coffee and chocolate. I like that over bitter for the sake of bitter.

80 Acres is good from Boulevard. Its a hoppy wheat beer.
