I am not interested in Lagers so no comments about them from me.
As far as Ales go,
As many others have said, IPAs are the way to go if you want hoppy.
Otherwise, a good russian imperial stout will be quite hoppy too, but, will have very very different flavor obviously.
Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA & Founders Devil Dancer .. these are my 2 favorite 'strong' IPAs. They are a lot more bitter than most other IPAs, if you love bitter, these are great.
That said, if you're not exposed to IPAs, I'd shoot for something less than 80 IBUs and under 8% ABV as they are a lot more accessible and agreeable.
As far as stouts go, Have you had plain old regular Guinness? If you like it, but think it's too watered down, stouts are for you, If you don't care for it because it's too strong, then, not for you....
