So, what's the best "fuel reward" credit card out there now?

Well, I've finally decided to go ahead and get me one of those much-maligned chunks of plastic. I'm aware that many of them give you perks for using them, such as air miles, discounts at various businesses, and whatnot. I'm particularly interested in one that, when used, would give me points for and/or discounts on gas.

So, for those who would know, what's the best deal out there at the moment?

Look at the Citibank Driver's Edge card (citicards.com) and the Discover Open Road card (discovercard.com).

Driver's Edge rebates are a bit convoluted, so read their offer carefully - it may or may not be what you're looking for. Discover rebate is cashback, but has a monthly cap.

If you've got BP stations near you, get the Chase BP Visa. 5% rebate. Hell yeah.

Yes, but then you have to spend all your rebates on fuel filters and HEET to keep that crap from killing your car:laugh:

I had a student Driver's Edge from Citi. Great card, but I turned the rewards into points on the thankyounetwork.

I'm interested in hearing the options as well. I have a BP next to work and a Shell next to home. I'd rather not get both cards...

He's saying that BP supplies low quality gasoline.

Anyone have facts to back this statement up?

There's plenty of 5% gas cards that don't limit you to one particular station...no reason to go with one of those. I have a Chase Cash Plus Rewards that is 5% on gas and 1% on everything else. Redeem in $50 increments. I also have a Chase Perfect Card that is 3% on gas, 1% everything else and automatically credits the cash back to your account every month.

Well, the Discover Open Road card that kranky suggested looks good. 5% cashback on gas/auto maintenance up to $100/mo, 1% on everything else. I think I will go with it, unless anyone has a reason why I shouldn't...

Edit: after reading the thread linked by SoulAssassin, I think the Chase Freedom Cash card is better. 3% on gas AND, if I am interpreting the rules correctly, groceries, up to $600/mo. That would be good.

Edit2: The die is cast. I have applied for the Chase card. The online app screwed up halfway through (why can't anyone ever test their websites against something other than IE?!?) but a phone call confirmed the app was entered.

The 1% is tiered...there's plenty of other straight 5%/1% including some that give higher percentages at grocery stores as well. Read more here - http://www.fatwallet.com/t/52/711457/

REWARDS: Earn unlimited cash rewards on all purchases. Earn a full 5% Cashback Bonus on your first $1,200 in annual gas and auto maintenance purchases (G&A Purchases). In addition, earn a full 1% on all other purchases after your total annual purchases (including gas and auto maintenance) exceed $3,000; other purchases that are part of your first $1,500 earn .25% and other purchases that are part of your second $1,500 earn .50%. Combined G&A Purchases in excess of $1,200 earn Cashback Bonus at the same rate as other purchases. G&A Purchases are those made at merchants we classify as gas stations and at stores that primarily sell automotive parts and services, such as auto dealerships, auto repair shops, tire stores and car washes. Purchases made at select warehouse clubs, discount stores and their affiliates earn .25%. Rewards are redeemable in $20 increments. Full terms and conditions will be sent with your card. Starting October 1, 2007, we will be changing how we calculate rewards. You will still have the opportunity to earn 5% Cashback Bonus on up to $1,200 in G&A Purchases each year. You will earn 5% Cashback Bonus on your first $100 in these purchases each month - up to $1,200 each year; G&A Purchases in excess of $100 each month will still earn unlimited Cashback Bonus at the same rate as other purchases.

Probably not - BP uses Amoco fuels with I believe use to be (or still are...) some of the better ones. I've never had a problem with it in cars ranging from a POS 1992 Dodge Caravan to a Ford Lightning.

Just personal experience, although it was a while ago, and those stations might have been the problem rather than the company. It was kinda a joke, too. I mean, since when have the British been known for quality manufacturing?

My Chase Rewards is my primary card now, with 5% gas, groceries, drugs and 1% on everything else. I haven't looked it up yet, so I'm not sure if there's a cap on it, but I've redeemed a number of $50 checks.

The Citi Driver's Edge card pays 6% back on gas and other categories for the first year. AmEx Blue cash is up to 5% (tiered) on gas and other categories. The BP Rewards Visa pays 5% at BP stations. The Discover Open Road card pays 5% on gas, *but* only up to $100 per month spent on gas. Chase Freedom pays 3.75% back on gas and other categories if you redeem cash back in $200 increments.

Since those credit cards and others also pay great rewards in spending categories other than gas, you might want to try out the rewards calculator mentioned in my signature to see which card will pay you the most for your overall spending profile.

Neither of those cards exist anymore. The only one you can get as a new customer now is the Chase Freedom, which only offers 3%:

I think your best bet for maximum flexibility is the Chase Freedom. It only offers 3% cash back, but are there any cards left that offer an unconditional 5+% cash back anymore? I can't find any listed on FW.
