Every TB peripheral basically has to have its own built-in PCI-E card. So it'll never be cost-competitive. It'll get killed by a combination of USB 3 and (eventually) integrated 10GbE.
Works great for the Apple Thunderbolt display since they ensure their laptops match it on the other side. Outside of that, probably will never be used for anything ever.
