Don't P4s use a thermal diode?

If you're reading from the diode, then the temps are absolutely correct.

I wish AMD would let us read from the thermal diode. It's stupid that everybody was so alarmed at the "high" temps of the core. Of course it's going to be higher! The way we currently read temps, with the thermisistor under the CPU package, is quite simply retarded.

Nah, I'm reading from the abit EQ program. The diode is under my Zalman 7000Cu, so it'd be hard to read while the computer's running.

WTF j00 talkin' 'bout?

I think it'd hurt my CPU if I took the heatsink off while it was running dude!

WTF?! LOL!

What are you talking about?

I'll ask again.. Don't P4s have an on-die thermal diode? If so, is that what you're reading from? If you are, then aren't your temps normal? They're going to be considerably higher than a through-packaging temperature reading, which is virtually worthless.. besides having no temperature reading at all.

XP1800+ o/c'd to 2400+ (2 GHz). 35 deg. C, today. Never broke 40 deg. C on the hottest day, last summer.

right now it's sitting at 49 C, with a room temp of 76ish F. Gotta love the dual scales

45 C

if I leave the side panel on my case, it's usually at 61 C. I took off the side and it stays around 50 C. Go me

sittin fine at 43C with my 2200. I oc'ed to 2400 (166x12) using arctic silver and an Alpha 8045 heatsink and 80mm fan. I could get it up to 2600, but stability went down the tubes. Maybe I'll try decreasing multiplier and upping fsb to 200 later on and see where that gets me.

A lot depends on you ambient room temperture. I have my main computer upstairs and my secondary computer downstairs. My secondary computer in the basement runs cool, because the basement is much cooler than upstairs. My main computer runs at about 48c-50c at idle. When I tested it in the basement, I was running at 43c idle.

I've had to underclock my Barton from 2.0GHz to 1.9GHz for the summer. Always would croak when it hit 65C during heavy gaming.

34C on the case.

51C on the diode

46C on the socket

idle.

I'm beginning to think that a single low rpm 60mm fan, side exhaust, + power supply may not be enough case ventilation

Probably end up reattaching my two other 60mm fans.

<--- needs a new case, vga silencer, zalman heatsink, + AS5. =/
