My Abit EQ temps don't match my BIOS temps either. BIOS temps read even higher. LOL.

Oh well, as soon as this one dies I get an A64 3700+.

I turned off my CPU hsf once on my P4 2.2, (actually I wanted to unplug a system fan to run "fanless"). Damn though, my system was quiet except for the power supply fan. Anyways, it worked fine for almost a day (while I was on the net and playing mp3). It did rebooted suddenly though.. My system wasn't overclocked and also it was so silent that I knew it was the CPU fan not being on. No damage at all and I have checked it using prime95. Temps: 45C in bios, about 55C under load but I don't think my readings are accurate anyways. I don't run any system fans...

bounces between 35C and 41C, depending on ambient room temperature and load.

highest I've ever seen it has been 45C, and that was when I used a space heater to bring the room temp up to 80F (I was cold. heh)

I'm having auto-shutdown issues during map-loading within games... so I'm wondering if it's a heat issue. I already asked in the mobo section about this specific issue... just wondering what the avg was..

Do you have a power supply with a fan on the bottom of the unit and the CPU HS/Fan is very close to the bottom power supply fan?

If so then the power supply fan is creating a vacuum reducing the airflow significantly to the CPU HS/Fan resulting in that fan running slower and not enough air flow for proper cooling. I put a divider (I used the plastic pack that came with my 3200XP chip) between the bottom power supply fan and the CPU and that breaks the vacuum and all is well again.

They should have thought about this before adding the bottom power supply fan.

Uhhh...

You do realize that is a part of the ATX spec, right? The CPU is supposed to be right under the power supply air intake. You aren't blocking the air intake of your PS are you?

Unless your case is air tight and you don't have any intake fans, the issue is moot.

The fan won't run slower.

I love it when people try and play engineer.

Nope there's no fan on the bottom of the PSU. I no longer think it's a CPU heat issue because I checked the temp immediately after playing UT2k4 and it was just 57C.

(What's that smaller fan below my HSF - air around there is pretty hot)

Anyway, as you can see, there's really no clutter of wires in the way of circulation - I also keep the case open like you see there, under my desk, in a room that is always ~75F. The video card is a 2 month old 9800Pro you see there so there's no dust collection on it like the card below it which has been there for a while.

Troubleshooting for any component specific issue (RAM, etc.) is gonna be a b!tch. How do I tell if the single stick I have in there is overheating ?

57 degrees C is fairly high, although they tell you anything below 60 is fine. I had a computer that ran 24/7 at 55 for about a year to year and a half before it died from the heat stress.

Presently running Athlon 2400 with stock cooling at 43 degrees C full load.

Athlon XP 2500+ overclocked to 2200. It idles around 42-45 and maxes out at ~50 when stress testing and playing UT2k3 for a while. The idle temp could be lower, but the fan is too loud and obnoxious at the higher speeds, so I sacrificed a few degrees for a quieter system.
