What are some good alternatives to the NEC Silver IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3550A?

i have the sony DW-Q30A. which is basically a Lite-On SHW-1635S. it rocks. it's fast, not a single coaster yet. you can also hack it to burn at 48 instead of 40. and since it's a Lite-On drive, there are plenty of apps to "reset" the counter on the drive.

Mine works well for burning, and also for audio CD ripping with Exact Audio Copy.

NEC 4570 adds support for DVD-ram and is the same price as the 3550a if you don't mind getting the OEM version

I have a BenQ DW1655 and a couple of NEC 3550A's. Haven't had a single coaster from any of them. The BenQ has slightly better ripping speeds.

Lite-On burners don't last very long. I've gone through 3-4 Lite-On CD and/or DVD burners because they crap out after a certain number of burners. The laser just craps out. I'm currently using a NEC 35xx burner. Still working after a load of burners. I'm thinking about getting a BenQ when this NEC dies.

I have the Lite-On SHW-16H5S and I love it. I upgraded the firmware and it runs like a dream. It's fast, you can never hear it, and it is at a good price point. I just talked my dad into getting one. I think Smart Computing did a review on it and gave it a good review. Check it out. I have no problem recommending it. Not one coaster yet.

I have 4 DVD/CD-RW burners. One is built in to the laptop - can't specify a brand. The newest is the HP-740e w/Lightscribe, and I have two Plexies, the PX-716UF and PX708UF. All do their job as advertised - no problems. As you can see, I prefer externals - the only internal is in the laptop. There are several reasons for that, mostly stemming from growing up with burners for the last 14 years. I used to use all SCSI externals, but now have gone to Firewire, a SCSI derivative.

I have to agree with Baked. My Lite-on Cdrw Drives lasted less than three months each and not many burns/drive. I got a LG Burner and it has been working fine for over a year with many burns. I liked it
so much I got a second one for my other computer.

I had an LG and it was great, but when the time came to burn DVDs faster than 4x I went with the 16x BenQ. Both have been great drives, and if the BenQ was out of stock I'd go with NEC without a doubt.

my nec 3520a has been the best optical drive i've had. have had tons of others sh!t out on me.. except this one ancient hitatchi dvd-rom drive from 98-99ish.
