Eagerly waiting Anand's review. Or is it such an extreme paper launch that they don't even have samples for reviewers?

If you read at www.theinquirer.net the nocona doesn't seem to be a full 64-bit cpu. In fact, this is the only website that i have really found anything on. The intel cpu doesn't utilize a certain instruction so it is not currently compatible with public 64 bit Windows Beta.

There also seems to be very few parts available anywhere, for review or sale.

Two things, one does intel usually give people chips to review? I am not thinking so

two, even if they don't where is the press release and the news articles. The major websites do not have it save www.theinquirer.net and that just epxlains things a little bit. I am not sure if they did any benchmarking on it.

There was one website in german that has some numbers posted. The link for it is at www.amdzone.com. the numbers look disappointing. The 3.4Xeon can't keep up with the 2.2 Opteron.

Did you mean Itanium or Itanium2?

I think I'll wait for the desktop 64bit chips to be released before I worry about Intel and 64bitness.

On to Xeon, no reviews to be seen and this is ONLY a workstation version in single or dual CPU configs. Server chips to come later (maybe they fear an overlap with Itanium) with Desktop 64-bit chips when there is software support available.

So, Intel will sit back and let AMD build up a market for the 64-bit desktop. When it starts to mature software wise *cough* Windows 64 *cough*, Then Intel will release their chip.

Yes, it looks like Intel is content to let AMD feel out the 64bit desktop waters and take the associated risks for the time being.

what is the difference between a workstation cpu and a server cpu?

Is intel only going to provide it to people if you promise not to build a server with it?

I thought it didn't really matter. Now there are 3.2 Xeons in servers and workstations.

Okay, my mistake. The XEON-XMT will be used in Workstations and Servers in Single and Dual Processor configurations....ie: no 4-way and greater 64bit Xeon servers.

k that is what i thought. I couldn't figure out how intel could stop someone from doing that even if they wanted to.

Side note* It's not really important but it is EM64T isnt it (iAMD64)

does anyone think that there will be any major sites with benchmarks soon?

This has to be the sorriest product launch ever.

I'm reading of System Crashes and Inability to complete a benchmarking application being the reason for the lack of Benchmarks. Wouldnt they have provided pre-installed machines for testing?

Would Intel do this on purpose to allow AMD to gain market share so they arent considered a monopoly? Could this be a lawyer tactic should AMD be able to pull Intel into court and use it as leverage that AMD is out competing Intel.

Much Like Microsoft talks of Linux being major competition despite sales not being effected by Linux.

I like Linux guys I am big fan of Mandrake and Suse. I dont care for Redhat. Attitude is the problem with RedHat.

Intel P4 64 and XEON 64 boxes

And as Pariah said in another thread:

Xeons are not marketed to the public. They're a footnote even in the enthusiast market, so why would enthusiast sites be sitting around waiting to post reviews the moment they are released? Corporate America certainly isn't sitting around waiting for THG's or Anand's review before making their next mass upgrade.

Opterons aren't marketed to the enthusiast market either, but that didn't stop us wanting to get a feel for Athlon64 performance by reading about Opteron.

very true about the opteron. The xeon's are usually underwraps as far as review sites go. You do not see many xeon reviews. Maybe it is because everyone already knows the outcome of the old xeon vs opteron.

Yeah that line about "Intel® Pentium® 4 (will support EM64T as available from Intel)" certainly did tweak my interest. It almost sounds like it's something that will just be turned on with the Prescott.

The Xeons still hold no interest for me, though. Same for Opterons.

well i don't know yet, the p4 is having a couple problems right now. They have a ways to go before they can work on the em64t part yet. If the rumors are true, sites are having a little bit of trouble benchmarking their systems.

I would think if there was such a problem, sites would be trumpeting it as breaking news. A problem with a just released Intel chip would be the headline story, I would think.

We pretty much know that Prescott has the 64 bit stuff built in already, we just don't know if/when it will get activated.
