My advice is to list what you are going to be using your laptop for. Then decide how powerful of a laptop you need. I have a desktop for gaming, ripping, or any other heavy duty task. I don't need a powerful laptop, so my Thinkpad suites me well.

Dell Inspiron 8200 (1.7 GHz) and lovin' it! You can probably find some great deals on them since Dell just released the 8500 and the 8200 will be pushed to even lower prices.

I wouldn't buy an 8200 from dell right now. From what I've read on their customer support forums, the parts for making them are in short supply. Some people have been waiting a month for their laptop to even enter production...
