I definately overpaid for it, I was still new into computers at the time (young + naive + lots of money from hard work = bad combination). My next laptop won't be so close to high end.
The laptop would be absolutely perfect if its tiny little fan inside didn't make such a high pitched whinning noise. No more expensive Vaios for me
Compaq TC1000 Tablet PC!
1 Ghz Crusoe/768mb/40gb 5400Rpm (16mb cache). Soon will be stripping a Linksys wireless G router to retrofit my tablet with an integrated wireless-G.
Not a speed demon, but onboard Geforce 2 go certainly does the job if i need to play some games.
I like this laptop. Performance is OK, size/weight are great. Very stable OS build (I have to thank our IT dept for that). I also like the fact that I can (albeit externally) use standard Lattitude CD/DVD/CDRW/FDD drives.
Only con's are....
1) Battery life only about 2 hours
2) No firewire
3) Would like a built-in optical drive
That Samsung X10 looks sweet though... It's amazing the progression in laptops recently. The new Centrino's are amazing (with the exception of the dumb .11b that must be bundled). ibooks and powerbooks are great. I'm really digging the recent advancements in portable computing.
nice specs for last xmas. 384mb of ram, 20gb (now 40gb) light weight 1.67kg. Nice screen. Very portable. does all applications no problems and handles WCIII not too badly.
i love my lappy...sxga is the best thing ever, and gaming is pretty good on it : ), warcraft 3 in 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200 (little laggy in some parts) but the battery life sucks balls, like 1:45 min if you don't touch it : P.
I know it is only 2.2ghz but the chipset that the HP uses isnt that great (Ali/ATI mix) so i dont get very good memory scores. Also the video card is integrated and pretty slow. I get the same memory scores on my laptop (ddr) that i do on my desktop (pc133 running at 140mhz).
I would love to own one of the new IBM ThinkPad T40s.
My preferred configuration:
Centrino 1.6Ghz CPU
512MB PC2100 DDRAM
80GB HDD
CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
14.1" SXGA Screen
Intel PRO 802.11b
Bluetooth
GB Ethernet
Mob. Radeon 9000 with 32MB DDRAM
WIn XP Pro
5.3 lbs with all onboard
Dell Inspiron 5100
2.8ghz p4
1gig DDR Ram
CDRW/DVD-ROM
Internal Wireless WiFi Network Card
32mb ATI Radeon Mobility 7500
Etc. Etc.
I love this laptop. I've had it for almost a month and it's been working great. Dell support is awesome too. The screen is crystal clear, I think maybe even better than my ViewSonic flat screen VE170. It's a 15" screen running at 1400x1050 resolution with the video card which is the only downside. It's only a 32mb card, whereas there are 128mb cards now for pc's.
