I think my 2 eVGA GTX 460 1GB (Version: Original) overclocked to 870/1740/4200 will play Diablo III just fine with everything cranked up at 1680x1050. Stupid DRM.

I'm sure my South African friend has a 4870 (Paired with a pentium G840) and he is playing fine although I don't know if he has all the sliders turned right up. Will confirm this with him tomorrow and post back.

On that note, I didn't realise all the settings weren't auto turned up to full while I have been playing and I really don't see any difference with shadows/effects etc between medium-high so there is really no need to crank everything right up unless you really feel the need to.

Any $100 dollar card will allow you to max out settings in D3.

I used to think that, and they probably are for most of the action, but there are some times in the game where the amount of action on the screen is off the rails and lesser vid cards will definitely choke a bit.

Hehe yeah, I can't wait for Max Payne. I pretty much got my GTX 670 because my 6950 was too slow for some games and my new build would have been held back.

Diablo 3 needs > 40 fps to feel smooth. Best budget upgrade is HD6850 or HD6870.

P.S. I am amazed how awful this game runs on an HD4890 and that it can't even get 60 fps on a GTX285. Awful programming on Blizzard's part considering how ugly it looks (literally looks like a 2005 game). I realize this game isn't about graphics but given the graphics, the performance is shockingly bad. GTX580 gets 76 fps in Dirt 3 and 94 fps in MW3 at 1080P + 4AA. No joke. This game should run at 600 FPS on a GTX680.

I did hear similar things about the engine chugging on hardware that should easily handle it based on the look of the game. Just boggles my mind.

Well I'm running Diablo on my GTS 250 just fine. I came very close many times to picking up a 7850 because i wanted to see for myself if indeed AMD has better IQ and also because noise, power and heat are VERY important qualities for me especially with the summer approaching. My OC GTS 250 actually feels like a radiator and i've got an aftermarket zalman fan on it.

That being said, I turned on Ambient Occlusion and i just can't see myself playing Diablo without it. The perception in increased contrast is amazing. It's not all gravy however. I was hitting 120 FPS originally. Turned on AO quality along with AA in game because the game tears really bad and my FPS dropped to 20ish! I changed the AO setting to performance and the game is at a playable 30 FPS.

Same. I really disliked the 3rd person view in Baldur's Gate 2 so I did not bother with Diablo. I only buy RPGs I can play in first person nowadays.

Fantasy games in first person have such limited fight mechanics. I don't mind playing Skyrim, but it still has a clunky battle system.

Don't understand your hate on 3rd person view. Although I also don't have much interest in Diablo. Witcher 2 was fantastic though and can't wait to play dark souls on pc.

I bought a GTX SC 670, Crucial M4 256g HD, 2x Shimian 2560x1440 27" mainly for D3, but Tera looks great at the reso maxed out also.

Beat it yesterday on normal and on Act II of nightmare atm, lvl 38 Demon Hunter.

I bought a 7850 only to find out that I should not have based my hardware requirements for Diablo 3 on the D3 beta because performance in D3 retail is a whole lot better than it was in beta

oh well, I can play other games with the 7850 where my 4870 definitely shows its age

I completely agree. I was in the beta with a 5770 at the time, and there were times where it wasn't quite right at 1920x1080 resolution. I have since upgraded to a 670, and every now and then the fps drops momentarily from 60 (the cap that I set) to 40 and back up again. What I cannot understand is how often it reads from the hard drive. Something is terribly wrong with how often data is loaded from the hard drive to RAM. When it occurs FPS drops drastically and I typically have to alt+tab out and back in. People reported this issue in the beta and it still doesn't seem to be fixed. The other problem is latency. 300 to 400 ms? Come on... they have some work to do.

I wouldn't expect much to change. SC2 also runs fairly terribly as well.

I have had no issues, with the FPS. I set mine out to the max of 150, and rarely dip under 85 and normally 100+ at 2560x1400 reso with everything on. I was kind of meh on the graphics when i played the beta on my 5850 and dell 23" monitor at 1920 reso. I have to say it looks night and day different on my new montior and 2560x1400 reso, i honestly am in love with it.
