same. just got my target 10% off coupon in the mail, so that coupled with the gift card should make it bearable

EDIT: just got a deal on a brand new 40gb off craigslist w/receipt + 5 ps3 games and 10 bluray movies...for $325. I'm satisfied.

now what to use the target coupon for...

and replaced with what?

HD downloads that can match physical HDM will not be possible for at least 5 or more years. Broadcast HD is currently crap compared to BD or HD DVD. the bandwidth isn't there.

People still buy CDs, etc....silly argument.

Btw, why does the crappier format always win? Beta vs. VHS for example.

why is BD crappier?

exact same technology...except that BD offers a wee bit more.
do you own or have experience with either?

I don't get this...it will work fine for several years to come...and the software won't stop working in you or your children's lifetimes. Do you already have a DVD player? Why not just sell that, b/c the A2 does the same damn thing...except that it's about 8x better.

Why not take advantage of the $10 and less HD DVDs that will be pooping up throughout the year? That's my plan, anyway

maybe my eyes are getting worse as a age...but I'm perfectly happy with upconverted DVD's. Why would I buy a PS3 when I already have a perfect good Xbox 360. Once the price of the PS3 is reasonable enough for me to purchase a second gaming system...I might consider if only for the GT series (and the ability to drive on the Top Gear race track)

I don't plan on ever buying anything form the current DVD options. I'll skip this one and wait for the next great thing. I'm just fine with my current DVD player and movies on my current Non-Digital. TV.

Not to bash people that can't afford it but it's like saying I'm not gonna buy a Porsche because I can get a Pinto for less.

You know that DVDs/players were really expensive at first too, right?

on a side note, kinda funny that thanks to the PS3 Sony grabbed a huge share of the market, which caused them to win the format war, and now the reverse is happening...people are buying the PS3 for the Bluray player.

I am not buying a PS3 I prefer the 360..

I could care less about blu ray..

The bottom line is regular dvd's are here to stay for quite some time..

It will be a very long time before anybody pushes the regular dvd out of the picture..

I get all of my movies off of stage 6 in divx format completely free and burn them on dvd in groups of 4 then play them on my phillips cheapie dvd player I got from walmart for 40 bux..

*gives finger to the movie industry and mumbles "facists"*

They keep messin with Bill Gates he might just buy Sony.. never know.. would be funny though if he did..

When I can score one for $150-200.

I bought my Toshiba HD-A3 for less than $100 and got 7 movies. I don't feel that bad, the player will just go into the bedroom when/if I buy a PS3. It upscales rather nicely.

DVDs aren't going anywhere anytime soon, but that doesn't mean there's no reason to upgrade. BluRay-HD DVD are signifigantly higher quality than DVD, and HDTV for that matter. The difference is night and day.

Though I hate Sony I guess an end to the format war is still a good thing. One question though. Aren't most BD players BluRay disks only an unable to play regular DVDs?

I'm happy with my HD-DVD player and am disappointed that BR won. My Toshiba A2 upscales nicely and works well, so I'm not completely screwed with it. I don't watch many HD-DVDs, anyway, so it still isn't a big loss. The price point, though, is what sucks the most. BD is more expensive and I can see those prices staying elevated now that they don't have to compete with HD-DVD.

I don't want a PS3, especially when they stopped making them backwards-compat with the PSx and PS2 games.

I'd rather have an Xbox or Wii.

I believe one of the reasons MS went with the external unit that isn't actually used for games is because they were hedging their bets with the possibility that BR would win and they would add a player to the 360. Never say never.

Personally, I'm waiting a bit longer. Rumors of die shrinks on the cell proc, dual shock 3 coming and probably a 120-160GB drive in an upcoming unit.

Sorry but I don't see Sony licensing their BD player for a rival console. I mean thats the PS3s only real selling point. The 360 blows the PS3 out of the water in content and quality games.

I already have a PS3 and play Blu-Ray movies. It works well as a DVD upscaler too as I watched Ferris Beuler's Day Off for the first time this weekend on it as well as Back to the Future a couple weeks ago. Looked great, although I'd still love BTTF on HD!

I mostly buy all of my movies from Amazon though... and that's during the BOGO deals.

That sucks, we have an HD-DVD add on for the 360, and I don't think it will even upscale DVDs to 1080i/p since we lack a 360 with HDMI. Are Universal and Paramount the only studios left supporting HD-DVD?

You can upscale if you use a VGA adapter.

Beta certainly had some advantages... namely being able to record even when the source had copy guards and vastly better quality. The only thing is that beta tapes couldn't hold as much as a VHS and some movies had to go onto two tapes if I remember correctly. If they could've made a way to make sure a 2 hour movie would've fit while still keeping better quality... I think they would've had it.

What does this mean? Early Blu-Ray players won't be compatible with later discs?

I believe some early Samsung players have issues updating and because of that there's a class action lawsuit against them now.

The profiles are about hardware to support bonus content. Profile 1.1 added a requirement for dual-decoder picture-in-picture, profile 2.0 requires 1GB of flash storage and makes ethernet mandatory.

The best part is that HD-DVD has had these features since launch .

EDIT: Damn me for not looking. I bought Resident Evil on Blu-Ray simply to buy a movie (check-outs at the front of Wal-Mart were jam packed and you can pay in Electronics anyway, but I feel better if I buy something), but it seems Resident Evil 2 is MPEG2... unless you buy the Resident Evil Trilogy on Blu-Ray! So now I need to get the trilogy and hope I didn't open the movie yet.

Won't be buying one ever.

Matroska Video and a 27 widescreen monitor ftw, BD player not required.

I don't believe Sony has control over that. It's not Sony's format, it's the Blu-ray Disc Association's format.

Psst, Matroska is a container and means nothing!

My HDTV sees more 720p resolution h.264 encoded mkvs, mp4s, wmvs (VC-1), etc more than it sees HD-DVD or Blu-Ray videos .
