I do not game anymore (never owned a dedicated game system anyway) and we hardly ever watch movies. I got an HD-TV for sports and some TV shows. Though I am somewhat interested in the HD Optical Format War, it is only from the perspective of a spectator.

I am enjoying the show and pass the popcorn.

Run over VGA and it will. Just not component.

I wonder if there are going to be any good bargains to be had? I wouldn't mind having a collection of 30 - 50 HD DVD's and a player, if the price was right.

Maybe when they're under $200 I'll get one. Oh yea, and maybe after I finally get an HDTV. Blah.

I'll be in soon. Just really hoping for another price drop or even more importantly, IR support for my Harmony remote.

I bet you could get a pretty good deal on a laserdisc player too. But seriously - the reason I wouldn't do that is because the player will eventually die. And you'll have to keep the player hooked up to watch the movies - yet another component in your home theater, yet another tied up input on your receiver/TV, etc.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "the price is right." If I could get a player and that many movies for $100, I could watch them each at least once and not care if I ever watch them again.

Well.. from what I've read transferring HD DVD movies to your hard drive is not impossible. Buy the player and the disks. Then back them up onto a large capacity drive so you can still watch them when the player dies.

$25-30 per movie and a crappy selection at that? I'll pass.

For now I'm quite happy with my media server. Hundreds of movies and thousands of episodes of TV shows that I don't even have to leave the couch to watch.

I was going to get a PS3 sooner or later. I was just waiting until the prices dropped a bit further and the fact that I'm moving in to my own house. It is nice that BR is going to win. It just saves me some extra £££ but the PS3 line up has improve!

I can't wait until GT5 comes out

I'll seriously consider going BD when a decent standalone player drops below $200. Hopefully ethernet will be a standard feature, which will make firmware updates easier. That was one feature I really liked about my HD-A3.

I don't think I'd use the PS3 as a gaming system, so I'll pass on that.

The PS3 blows the 360 out of the water in quality of hardware.

In all honesty, the PS3 has a decent lineup of games, and the future looks fantastic as far as games come. Sure, the 360 still trumps the PS3 in the games area (depending on what you want to play), but "blowing it out of the water" is a huge overstatement currently.

Anyways, I'm glad Blu-Ray "won"...not because I want to back Sony, and not because I already own a PS3. It just offered more than HD-DVD. More support, more space, etc. The only thing HD-DVD had going for it was a lower price, but it will all even out over time (and the gap was closing already). Why support a technically (on paper) inferior product (aside from price and certain exclusive titles)?

156 games rated 70% or higher on Gamerankings vs 53 games rated 70% or higher. Yeah, it blows it out of the water.

But even with "only" 53 games that are worth playing, most people will likely find enough games to keep them occupied. Only 27 of those games are sports and racing games. :Q But seriously - Rainbow Six: Vegas, CoD 4, Oblivion, Ratchet & Clank, UT3, etc.

Not to bash people that can't afford it but it's like saying I'm not gonna buy a Porsche because I can get a Pinto for less.

You know that DVDs/players were really expensive at first too, right?

on a side note, kinda funny that thanks to the PS3 Sony grabbed a huge share of the market, which caused them to win the format war, and now the reverse is happening...people are buying the PS3 for the Bluray player.

Agreed! That's my point. I don't know why people are complaining that Blu-Ray is expensive. Regular DVD was expensive compared to VHS. You pay a premium for the latest and greatest which has always been the case.

It all depends on the price for me. When the PS3 gets down to $300 I will seriously consider it, but it will be for other reason besides just playing BD. By then we should see more exclusive game titles out. I would prefer a dedicated BD player over a console. For that I would not want to spend more than $200, though.

I might be a small voice in this but I would not advocate using the PS3 for a dedicated movie player if you're going to play games on it as well. If you're going to play an occasional game on it and use it exclusively as a BD player, that's fine. Vice versa..fine as well. But for continual use, playing both games and BD will wear your console a lot more than just using one type of media. My orginal Xbox drive died prematurely after a year and a half of use. My PS2 didn't last too long either (of course I had the early build so it's hard to say). I didn't have a DVD player back then or cable for that matter so I made heavy use of the DVD playback feature and I also gamed quite a bit. All of this is anecdotal evidence to be sure but I would not want to risk a high price equipment.

Just got mine today from Target. Picked it up for $399 with free $40 gift card. I also used a $5 off toy coupon as well on it.
