So... who wants to help us out in a near-impossible task?

TA is well-known for stepping up to the plate and competing hard in impossible races.

We've gained a whole bunch of new members for the DPAD team in the past couple of weeks - but we STILL just got clobbered by the upstart US-Distributed team.

Not to take anything away from those folks - but I KNOW we can do better than this. We've got some "on-fire" people - and we need MORE!

Who's got a few cycles (or a data center or two) to lend to the task?
This is a butt-kicking DC project that has matured nicely - with a well-behaved client and GREAT stats!

So here I am... recruiting again. I just can't accept being #7 in a contest we should RULE.

Who's with me?

Just to get that straight:

DPAD is simulating a particle emmiter that might be eventually build in 2015. Ok. But who's the scientific advisor of this project? I mean for S@H u got Berkely, for F@H u got Stanford, ... Maybe I just didn't see it but is there any University or so that runs this project or is it just this Stephen Brooks?

Well, if it's only Stephen, how is he able to simulate a whole particle ammiter? I mean Universities take months and years to complete a admin a DC project and he does it all on his own? :Q

Don't wanna insult anybody, but I'm no convinced that my CPU power would be in a good place with DPAD as long as it is not ashured what happens with the crunched data and who get the benefits and if the scienitfic approach is rock solid.

Btw: D347h, I saw u joined CMPD (though u didn't trickle yet) Welcome!!

Hi BMC, thanx for ur interest in DPAD. Well I don't know if Stephen Brooks is the scientific advisor, but I read a article (the link is somewhere in the dc forum, but I can't find it!!!) about a Particle Accelerator that is being built.
If maybe some one could get it again...

Come on guys join DPAD and thanx DanC!!!

I guess the article u think of is right on the DPAD site. At least that's where I got the info from. They wanna build it in 2015 and try to test its efficiency with DPAD. BY now it has already proven twice as efficient as supposed.

So, if I don't miss something important, the goal has already been achieved. Or not?

BMC, two things the link to the article was here and the results are getting better by the day.

If you really want technical info about DPAD, mail Stephen Brooks, sb@stephenbrooks.org, if you want to join [TA] DPAD and have FUN with a great team, it would be great to have you with us!!!

@amdxborg:

Ok. I gonna mail him and search the site again. If he convinces me that it is worth the CPU power - I'm on it!

BMC Thanx for thinking about it and sorry I can't give you more info. Although I don't know much about the project, the [TA] DPAD team is great and I'll be staying on just for that!!!

BlackMountainCow,

Certainly I can respect your wanting to devote CPU time to worthy causes. I have never paid THAT much attention to the periphery with regard to the science of the project. (no more so than I did when I was doing SETI or RC5-64. For me-- it's the competition, and the achievement more so than the science.

However... to address your question - here is a partial list:

Argonne National Laboratory
Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics
CERN
Columbia University
Cornell University
Fermilab
Illinois Institute of Technology
Imperial College London
Indiana University
INFN-LNF
Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna
Michigan State University
Osaka University
Oxford University
Princeton University
Tech-X Corporation
Tel Aviv University / BNL
University of California, Berkeley
University of California, Davis
University of California, Los Angeles
University of California, Riverside
University of Chicago
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
University of Iowa
University of Mississippi
University of Wisconsin

So -- from the standpoint of being involved with some pretty heavy-hitters in the science end of things - we're in good company.

Beyond that, there's the quest for STATS!

What I really like is that I get my stats fix on an hourly basis. That's a real plus. Additionally, there are so many different ways to make your "mark" in this competition. There's the overall production, but then there's the individual efficiency stats that make it alot more fun. It's both quantity -- AND quality that count!

DPAD is just obscure enough that there isn't an over-abundance of participants, but there's some VERY stiff competition in the top 10, and it's not that hard to get there. Compared to what it takes to get into the top 10 of virtually any other DC project - it's pretty appealing.

With some more DC heavy-hitters on the team, we can knock US-Distributed back down a notch, and set our sights on higher ranking. For quite a while, it was just me - and a couple of other teammates holding TA in 7th place. With just 30 or so more participants -- we could be a real powerhouse!

I guess I just like those "impossible" contests....
Thanks for your interest - and great questions!

Darn ... I guess now I don't have any other choice but to join [TA]DPAD!

OK. Gimme about a week to finsih my current ClimatePrediciotn.NET run and one machine (XP +2000) is gonna be for DPAD!

Well I believe in the project enough to have moved 2 2700xp's from seti to dpad and plan to move more when I can.
Believe me that takes some doing for me to do that.

Please see Engineer's post LINK about the MAJOR push and call-to-arms by BBR Team Starfire SETI. Not to crap on your recruiting thread DanCbut the Seti TeAm is facing it's biggest challenge yet.

I have said this in the past, and I know it doesn't account for much, but I will move ALL my crunchers to DPAD once Seti 1 finishes. It won't be long now, but TeAm Seti heeds all the help we can get.

Not unlike Team Starfire, I feel we should rally all of the other DC TeAms to Seti with an assurance that all "donated" time to Seti will be returned by the Seti members to the other DC projects. For example, (DSL's Recruiting Link) if seven people from DPAD switch over to Seti, then 7 people from Seti will work on DPAD to return the favor.

Think about it.

compudog,

While I'm not insensitive to the challenges faced, I'd submit that TACube more than repaid its SETI debt.
Compare the number of active participants in SETI, vs DPAD...

If 7 people switched over to SETI - our DPAD efforts would be dead. While I don't believe your post is
intended to "crap" on the thread... it borders on it. I ran SETI for over a year - even though I hated it.
I think we're even-steven on that one.

I'm not trying to get anyone to leave another project - just raising awareness for another great project,
and hoping to recruit members that may not already be doing any active DC project - or considering a switch
anyway. We can do both.

I am still keeping the two I have on DPAD on DPAD. I was going to move more over to DPAD this weekend until I read about BBR's big push. When Seti 1 is done, DPAD WILL get my full attention. I just feel a little guilty for not helping more with DPAD.

The answer to the problem is to recruit from outside of Anandtech. Without new blood we can't even began to compete in the many projects these days.
One of the reasons Todd and I formed the Rebel Alliance was to bring new blood into Anandtech from outside and it seems to have worked. We went from 85-90 work units a day to 550 a day by recruiting friends and coworkers into the Rebel Alliance, people who haven't even heard of Anandtech or Distributed Computing period. By having a mini-team for them to join it made it more interesting for them and now nearly the whole hotel I work at is crunching seti. With the knowledge and permission of the GM ( Who's work machine is also crunching seti )

Compudog, I have 25 pcs running SETI crunching 120+wu a day, and 28slower pcs I wasn't using for SETI on DPAD. Since I reached 5k in SETI, I had feelings on switching some or most of my faster pcs to DPAD!!! But when I read Engineer's post, I changed my mind and I'm going to finish SETI, since it's ending soon. I'm not saying SETI is more importend than DPAD(dpad's great and the members is fun to crunch with!!!), but DPAD has still got some time left and SETI doesn't and I don't like BBR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need more outside members for DPAD and SETI!!! so guys lets start recruiting like mad!!!
