When you are at work all day why don't you use smart lock or trusted places or whatever it is your version of android has to keep the phone unlocked there?

Not in an office environment, security is paramount.

Because if you leave it unattended for a minute you'll have random dick pictures posted to your facebook.

ahhh true, working in a zoo has its downsides

If there are some pranksters in the office I'll keep it locked or take it everywhere with me but as of now I keep it unlocked based upon the wifi network I'm on. My house, work, family's house, friend's house - I like the fingerprint sensor in the back as it's best when taking the phone out of your pocket when out and about - your finger is right there, so it's best for that kind of usage.

I work with nurses, I bet chimps are better behaved!

I do prefer the fingerprint thingy on the front partly because I really like a clicky physical home button but I can see that that's becoming a rarity.

I leaning toward no unless there are some really great promos mostly b/c the under screen fingerprint scanner isn't supposed to be introduced until the Note 9. Assuming the S9 is to the S8 what the S7 was to the S6 (refinement) with the only real difference being the introduction of dual cameras + centered fingerprint scanner, I'll stick with my S8+ until the Note 9.

If it ends up packing something new or significantly better, then I'll be tempted but I don't expect it.

So I might end up getting the S9+ only b/c my wife is crazy about portrait photos and her iPhone 7 doesn't support it and we're going to wait for the 2018 iPhone X refresh to get her a new one.

Hopefully Best Buy has a similar promo at launch like the S8 where they were giving $100 off the price + any promos the carriers/Samsung were running around trade-ins.

i'm on an s7 and still happy with it. There seems to be some Plateau of performance now, where a lot of people are happy with their current device. I will take a hard look at the x/10 when that does come out but I don't see wanting to upgrade until then.

I agree with that! The octa core is hard to beat! Maybe they need to up it to 16 cores! Need to press on! Stretching that envelope! The only way I am going to upgrade is if they have a decent update to the camera. Performance/screen resolution has been good enough so far for me. One day they maybe they will sell the phones with a optimized 20MP sensor with a variety of clip on lens, like fish eyes and zoom types of various distances. I refuse to buy a point and shoot with a super zoom BULKY second camera to charge and try to have with me.

Isn't the active series flat (though ugly)? Will be interesting if they hint at all to the rumored foldable x

Yeaa nice hint but i cant hold all that metal and an active in a case is to bulky. Besides the screen format is just to long if its similar to s8. Imo. And yes its ugly

Nope. Not replacing my phone with anything that doesn't have a removable battery. My g4 is a little over two years old and does everything I want it to. I might have to cave in at some point and get a sealed phone unfortunately. I've seen new in the box g4's available right now for $140. Hard to spend $800 for a phone when you can get a perfectly capable phone with a removable battery for $140.

That is highly HIGHLY unlikely. Sealed phones allow engineers much easier ability to attain IP67/68 rating, as well as allowing a larger battery in the same size device vs an identical sized device with a removable battery.

That coupled with wireless fast charging and Quick Charge and the fact phone batteries tend to last all day these days even with heavy use. I just don't see Samsung going back to a removable battery design.
It's not about fast charging. Its about the fact your sealed phone becomes a paperweight in two years time. I'm going on 2+ years right now on a LG g4. I plan on using it at least another year maybe two. Planned obsolence is a great idea for manufacturers and complete idiocy on the part of the buyer.

Specifically, Samsung says that after two years' worth of charges and discharges, the Galaxy S7 only maintained about 80% of its total effective battery capacity. The Galaxy S8 and S8+, however, will maintain 95% of their capacity over that same period with the same usage. Samsung isn't going into the specifics of how this was accomplished, which isn't surprising, but it could perhaps both be the battery itself and advancements with the charging and power management systems.

So...maybe now the replacement is every 4 years. Maybe the S9 will have even better results. I'll wait for the S9, before jumping into a new phone, hopefully they will have some good deals for the people willing to jump first. Or I'll be getting a note 8 if the specs aren't impressive enough.

Can't you usually send the phone in and get a new battery for a fee at or near $100?

Yes.
I'm a huge fan of removable batteries in everyday use. It was awesome never worrying about battery use in my phones that had it, because a fresh 100% charge was always a quick swap away.

But the agrument about long term replacement just doesn't really fly. While you can't do on the fly swaps, a replacement for a fee from the manufacturer is available for most flagships.

So the 'its useless in two years' argument isn't really true. It's just not as convienient or cheap as it once was.

I doubt many people are sending in phones worth about $200 for a $100 battery replacement. And the turnaround time means you better have a backup phone to use in the meantime. No thanks. I will use the g4 until it dies or replace it with a v20 sometime at the end of this year. That'll be 3 years of use. Oh and current battery is a 6500mah beast.

Use a S8 now. But I have not all together ruled out an upgrade to the S9. Will have to wait and see...

I doubt the tests are representative of real world usage. Most people charge for way too long, fast charge in a hot car, charge when battery is nearly full, etc.. I'm sure Samsung's tests are at room temp and charge once a day when battery is low. All perfect test conditions. Just give me back my replacable battery!

I personally coudn't care less what 'many people' do. Is it possible? Yes? All I care about. That other people don't know something- means squat diddly. Phones are a personal choice mostly, and every aspect of having one, using one, replacing it/upgrading it whatever are personal choices.

So basically, for someone with a brain, the right (easily obtained) tools, an ability to follow simple instructions, a little patience, and about 15 minutes or so of time, opening up an S8 is actually pretty damned easy, all things considered.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7Mkp3wdwu4

A replacement battery runs from $15-$25 currently.

Last I saw, I think Samsung itself charged around $45 to do this process, and turnaround was one business day. So I'd weigh is it worth attempting myself (I'm pretty handy, so yes) or just paying someone and not having my phone a day or two.

When the time comes, and I consider is my Note 8 worth either option, I wouldn't have an issue doing either. Would I give a flying rat if NOT ONE OTHER PERSON on the entire planet could figure the same out and do the same? No. Because it's MY phone, not a community project. Everyone else on the planet can toss their perfectly good phone minus a new battery if they want, and spend $800 -$1K on something new if they want to. For me anyway (and I'm sure for 'many' given I don't think it actually is that costly) replacing a battery vs. new phone is probably worth it.

I do think the rush to get rid of removable batteries was a dumb move. These damn things don't really need to be waterproof and all the other crap as much as battery swapping was a much more useful feature.

But that said, I'm not going to pretend to be a dullard and act like swapping a spent battery in a 'sealed' device isn't possible. That's just silly, when clearly it IS possible. I also don't think it'd ever be necessary more than once in the lifetime of most given devices, so it's not that unreasonable to jump through a minor hoop once for a decent flagship.

I stuck with removable batteries as long as I could and kept a spare one in each of my main bags plus my car and my wallet. But where the industry going is clearly away from removable batteries so we have to adjust. I don't think paying a hundred bucks or less in 1.5 years to replace my pixel 2 XL battery is a bad deal. Of course I'll do that and then buy the Pixel 3 XL and keep the Pixel 2 XL as a backup phone until the Pixel 4 XL comes out then sell the 2. But that's just how I'm adapting. If you want to keep your phone longer AND keep a removable battery you are going to have to just deal with a very small choice of phones including using older tech.

If you are on AT&T I have a V20 that I can sell you, I only used it for less than 6 months and it's my backup phone now but it's locked to AT&T. Kept in a case it's entire life so it should be in great shape, never gave me any problems - besides a below average battery life. But that was the V20.
