There's probably hit teams and squads we've never heard of and the familiar names we see in the papers are for public consumption.
Sniper rifle diplomacy is seldom obvious.

This question has no answer IMHO. It all depends on the individuals and what mission they are trying to accomplish. I wouldnt wanna mess with any of them

<< So whose tougher >>

Define "tougher". Out of all listed, the Rangers have the least difficult qualification process and physical requirements, not to imply that its 'easy'. Although the Rangers fall under the same Special Operations Command as the Navy Seals and Green Berets, they are not considered "special forces". Rangers are advanced light infantry and fast attack forces who are "special forces capable", which means they are qualified to operate in joint missions with true special forces (usually in close supportive roles).

In terms of stamina and physical endurance, the Navy Seals would get my vote. Believe it or not, NONE of the U.S. special forces receive much hand-to-hand and martial arts training. Navy Seals receive a 25-hour (approx.) crash course in martial arts based hand-to-hand combat, and that is a vast improvement from what they received a decade ago. It is very common for special forces operators from all branches to seek additional hand-to-hand training on their own time because many feel as though their military hand-to-hand training wasn't as comprehensive as they would like.

As one poster stated, there is no answer to a question like this. It comes down to the individual, not a particular branch of service or unit. You're going to find operators from all branches who are as tough as they come, including the British and Australian SAS, and you can find the occasional guy right off the street who is tougher than most.

Cool....... I should have tried to be a seal instead of just being a regular squid (EW).

I'd vote against navy seals; probably for delta force. My knowledge is limited, such as it is, but it's my opinion.

The reason I'd vote against seals is just from conversations with some marine friends. Bowden (author of black hawk down) describes the "d-boys" as not having any real command structure, which they can do because they're all superb.

The seals--this is my understanding--have the same lack of command structure, but they aren't as superb. So friend [marine] said to captain of the seal team "i'm going to clear the range (squad-based range with popup targets) and I'll tell you when I'm done. when he was coming back, he sees a seal on the range as he comes over a hill. Seal says "dude, I almost shot you" as seal was there before he was supposed to be. Seals spent all their time sunning themselves, he also cites. (though to be fair, this guy also said that seals are probably great in the water).

So if you want to blow up a ship, use the seals. if you want to do something that isn't on water, use delta force/sas.

Don't join any of them, because you might die, and death sucks

Of the ones you listed, I would say the following:

1. Delta Force
2. SEALs
3. Marine Force Recon
4. Green Berets (almost a tie for 3rd).
5. Rangers (by a significant margin)

Btw, the International squads are very good. British SAS are probably up with Delta. Austrailian SAS aren't bad. The German GSG are good as is the Italian GIS.
