So you can choose whether or not to be gay?

Kind of interesting read

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>"I know that homosexuality can be overcome because that's the story of my life," she said. Fryrear said she lived as a lesbian for nearly a decade before becoming a Christian and later "overcoming" her homosexuality through a long process of change and self-examination.

"I'm changed. I'm a heterosexual woman now. I'm not sexually attracted to women. I am romantically and sexually attracted to men."</end quote></div>

I don't buy the choice thing, necessarily. What would motivate a lesbian to want to change?

I compare trying to be gay or not gay (depending on what you are now) as trying to use my left hand to write when I'm right-handed.

Guys live as heterosexuals for years telling themselves and others they are only attracted to women...and then "come out". So this lady just did the opposite? Or she's living a lie to make herself feel better and telling everyone she is straight when she truly is not. Only she knows what gender she is truly attracted to.

Isn't there a third option - forced to be? (in the prison sense)

I can learn to write left-handed, but I can't make myself be attracted to guys.

i think you can be born gay, be wired gay by a traumatic childhood, and choose to be gay.

i also don't think it really matters... at least it shouldn't. love is love. sexual attraction is sexual attraction. everyone's different.

in all honesty, humans are born a certain way, but that can only shape us so much. we are also a product of our environment, and thus we can be shaped to be a certain way no matter how much our genes are working to pull us in a different direction. if someone is so against the stigma of being gay, they can probably overcome their genes and 'force' themselves to enjoy being straight. I'd say these people are still gay, as its still deep in their mind, and it probably wouldn't be hard to bring that back out in someone. coax that person out of their shell, and get them to believe that whatever their reason to change their sexuality, no longer applies.

Quebec comedian Yves Jacques was gay until in his forties but my mom told me yesterday that he met and married a French woman and they now have two children. So I guess that the attraction can change for some people or it's simply that one falls in love with a person not a gender and love >> sexual attraction.

Her conversion is highlly suspitious. I think she is just conforming to her new found religious beliefs.

You're only gay if you push back.

To those who say that homosexuality is a choice, I always must ask, did you choose to be heterosexual? Was it posed to you at some point early in puberty, "Choose your path: homosexual or heterosexual."

yes, I chose not too be gay. I don't find guy's balls that attractive. If you do then that's your choice. Anybody could be gay if they want to be. "Want" is the key word.

considering....

Yeah, there's a couple of minor downsides (like my addiction to breasts would have to be stifled), so it'll take some thought.

Umm, from what I heard, supposedly only Guys are born gay (or at least more likely to be genetic-related than girls), women can choose either way. However take my word with a grain of salt I haven't really researched this, just something I saw in one of science magazines.

I don't think ANYBODY will argue that there is absolutely no choice, but the main argument is that some people view it is ONLY choice, instead of some people being born with the genes to throw them a few steps in the direction of being gay. Genes can only do so much, that much has been said recently for a LOT of things. If you take the right steps you can change almost anything that your DNA would rather you not change.
Thus, I think some people are born with the tendency to become gay, but may in fact change that with a little bit of work, but no choice needs to be involved to be gay for those individuals. People without those genes at birth, may still become gay if they end up convincing themselves its more enjoyable for them.
You are most definitely a product of your environment, and a few key things in your environment throughout your life can have an impact on your 'choice', be it an easy or extremely difficult choice based on your genes.

I have a gay brother, and even though he swears he never made a choice to be gay, he acknowledges that some gay people do make the choice for many different reasons. He has also met people that became gay after very traumatic events in their lives. The brain is a very powerful thing, but it is also very fragile. No one knows what goes on in other people's brains to cause them to think and feel a certain way. All we can do as society is develop basic laws and guidelines that protect citizens and let people make their choices as they see fit.

Edit- he also admits there are gay people that turn straight. He has even met some of them.

Gay is gay. The ones who claim they have chosen not to be are either fooling themselves or fooling others. The fact that they're non-practicing and celibate doesn't change who they are.
