My initial reaction would be: She's not moving, but a stab wound wouldn't cause an instant death, so fishy.

Then my hand would grab the gun, just to be safe.

The I'd think - wait a second. If I'm wearing a holstered gun I'm either a cop, or a cowboy.

Then I'd check my surroundings. Am I in a wild west setting, or a modern one? I might look at my clothes to be sure.

In my home for example, everyone's bedroom is on the 2nd floor. If a criminal broke into the first floor, essentially every shot would be clear.

How much time do you spend practicing shooting at burglars? You make it sound trivial, but I suspect "knowing what's behind your target" and "hitting your target" is not as easy as you make it sound when you are waking up in the middle of the night and making your shot either in the dark, or dazzled by the light hitting your dark-accustomed eyes.

And even if your bedrooms are upstaris, how can you be sure that everybody is up there? You kids might have gone to the fridge for a glass of milk, your dog might have been napping on the floor, and are now hiding behind the couch, etc.

OK, you might be a crack shot, but I submit that the avarage joe with a gun in his own house in the middle of the night has a greater chance of hurting someone in the family that the burglar has.
