I am glad I found this thread, this is the kind of thing I may have played with, not out of necessity, but bc I enjoy sport of tweaking for its own sake from time to time. The idea of having a custom install disk does appeal to me on the face of it.

I actually do care about Vista's size as I have got it on my 15k RPM 36GB U160 SCSI HD. However, after having disabled hibernation, moved the page file to its own partition on the outer edge of my Seagate 500GB 7200.9, and moved the shell folders to another partition on said drive, I still have 11GB to play with on the boot drive. So I am good.

One thing that I have found out is that people complained about the bloat of XP when it came out. Some people still haven't switched from 98 or 2000 and the really think it is a better OS than XP. They may be intelligent people but I would never hire them because they show no desire to improve.
Sure Vista has even more bloat than XP but it is more appealing to the eye and is so much more stable then XP.
I have been running Vista Ultimate 64 bit for over 3 months now and have xp in a dual boot but within the next year will get rid of it because I have not used it since vista was intalled. It is so much faster and stable.

And I had used it long before SP1 was even announced, so I had no way of seeing this coming. Who knows what else it will cause compatibility problems with in the future. Its just not worth the trouble to save a gigabyte or two.

Vista only takes 8 GB the other 7 GB is for the swap file. I always forgot about it adding so much used space.

+ 15% of the HD space for System Restore
+ ~10% for the Recycle Bin
+ the Temp/Temp Internet files that people keep without "cleaning" them.
+ other unnecessary, useless crap, that could/shoud be deleted.

The installation "footprint" is the least anyone should worry about...

Well if I plan on running my OS off a ram drive I create out of my ram sure but otherwise I don't care how large Vista is really. Any OS is out of this world fast when installed on a ram drive and you only need 500 MB max.

I personally like this useful tools. Soley because allows to remove extra stuff the I am not going to use Microsoft think I'm going to use.. I like to customize my operating system to my preference but keeping in mind not to remove "critical component " Vista may need.
here example:
Vista include a lot drivers support but some space hugger on the dvd
Printers Driver take up 752mb of dvd space, and this driver I won't use for my own usage.
than we have
Media Center,
Tablet,
Music and Video Example,
Sample Pictures,
Languages,
Vista Games,
System Restore,
Security Center,
Windows Defender,
Accessories except Wordpad and Paint I think this tool is useful I might need cook up a quick note or draw something. Some Windows Services not depend to other services got remove..
So I end up with 1gig dvd image..

Well I like tweaking stuff and see how effect the OS I'm not afraid to fuck up my OS I just reinstall and go at it again.. but that just me.

but whatever people have there Prefrences and there habbits and there freak side like me hate having so much processes running. lol

Except that of the 4 items in that list only 1 of them is actually used by the system and not the user. The recycle bin doesn't take 10% of your space right off the bat and temp files/"other useless crap" should be considered user data for which the drive space actually should be used.

750gb hdds could be had for under $150 these days. I think the debate over space wasted is quite moot to have any practical meaning. Having a peace of mind is a very valid reason though, ultimately it is personal satisfaction that counts at the end in everything afer all. People argue about the same thing with lossy vs losless codecs. I know I could be ok with lossies but I go with losless for the sake of transcoding and peace of mind, though there are some not-so-subtle cases where I notice the difference. nothing wrong with doing what you feel more comfortable with. Having to reinstall when SP1 comes around does sound like a very real reason to stay away from it though, if anything.
