I just fired up the service install of SoB on my newly acquired k62 400mhz and SoB won't start. It got k and n from the server, and it's been sitting there for nearly 10 minutes doing nothing

Can you not run SoB on a k62? What can I run on it?

It will run, it just takes a long to do the intial setup. That being said, I gave up on my K6 for SoB about 2 months ago. I switched it to run as the secret user which does some double checking and is running far lower n values, and so therefore, much faster, and so is therefore much more useful, in my eyes. There is a new supersecret user name you could run it under too, which is running even lower n values.

At least the box is doing something useful.

Hi LyNx01.
I am running SOB on a P-233 MMX cpu.
It seems to be around 10 times slower or more than my XP1600+.
Haven't really checked thouroughly.
Running Chess Brain on it also.
Has the K6-2/400 started crunching yet?

Did you install sb normally before you did the service install? The normal sb has to be installed and *at least* the config must be saved before doing the service install. Otherwise things go really haywire...I've seen it happen, but can't replicate it because it doesn't happen again if you uninstall and try to do it again. I wish I knew what was really happening so I could fix it, but at least I can tell you how to work around it!

Yep. I installed SoB, configured it, closed it, unzipped the service install, installed it, then started it.

I get explorer.exe crashes as well. It's a fresh install of windows 2000, so I dunno what the problem is

Maybe try putting the original cpu back in and see if it locks up.
The heatsink might be to small for the K6-2/400 possibly?

Ah, the joys of troubleshooting.

I have had a K6-2 400 and my advise to you would be to find a nice charity in need of a crappy computer.

My K6-2 is running Ecp2, I dump it once a month or so. It just sits in the corner quietly crunching away.

Probably a little late, but my K6-2 450MHz was very slow. It only made about 11000 cEM's. My old PII300 before I sold it was running @ 35000 cEM's.

It also took very long for it to start up and initialize.

Otherwise, you might have a faulty CPU if you keep getting an explorer.exe error.

I tried running lifemapper on it and it crashed. My intent was to give it away, but if it's not stable, I'm not going to give it to anyone I was hoping to give it to either my dad's brother or my mother's sister so they could get online, but I don't think that's going to happen now!
