Agreed. But I think the watch vs play factor is totally different for soccer. I can't stand watching. I don't get what's so exciting. Football has thousands of times more excitement.
Well, soccer has thousands of times more excitement than baseball, and people watch that.

Every pitch in baseball is a potential play/home run/exciting throw... (And I think baseball is fairly mundane)
Soccer is a bunch of standing around, kicking a ball, jogging up... once in a while a guy makes contact with another guy that results in one of them being carried off the field on a stretcher... only to return two minutes later once their oscar-worthy flop secures a yellow card.
Soccer as a sport = Professional Wrestling in legitimacy..
