Soccer - more fun to play (as long as I wrap my ankle before playing), lots of constant on the run plays being made

90 minutes...

American football, on the other hand, has more action and is more likely to keep my attention.

It stops and starts every few seconds, how does that hold your attention more?

Well, they usually do replays and whatnot during that time. The times when they are running plays are usually enough to make it entertaining, with or without the frequent stops.

I've tried to get into soccer, I figured the rest of the world can't be wrong, but I just can't get into it.

Another thing I love about soccer is the atmosphere at games.

Instead of just screaming, the fans actually sing songs. You can't understand it unless you goto a major club or international game but the who stadium just swells up with emotion as the fans sing to lift up their team.

so they're bored and drunk, big deal

Really, truly, there is no sporting atmosphere like a European football (soccer) game - and I've watched a lot of sports.

There are drums in the crowd, trumpets, flares and fireworks, 50 foot flags... people care y'know? If you think Americans care about baseball, and Australians about rugby, they don't. Not really. Football fans really *really* care, and that's what makes the singing different.

Michigan/OSU? Army/Navy has cannons! Alabama/Auburn? Are you saying that the fans don't care? Just because they don't start a riot when their team wins and they don't try to (literally) murder the ref when their team loses doesn't mean they don't care.

And the best part... nobody gets killed in the stands, crushed up against a fence. Or maybe that's just a sign of true devotion?

Err 90 minutes+15 minutes at half time != three hours.

Soccer is like a fire drill with blindfolds, alot of running around but really just not getting anywhere. As for all the singing and such at soccer games, how else are they going to keep from falling asleep waiting for something to actually happen? Hell there not being entertained by the game so you gotta do something.

No it just feels that way when you watch it.

I guess it depends. I don't really like American football, and I think that it stops too much, while soccer can hold my attention much more. Sure there are some boring matches, but every sport has them.

Majority of the people who find soccer boring, simply don't understand the complexity of the game.

Why? Because of the commercials that go on between the plays. Where else are you able to watch a sporting event without any breaks. Just running all the time. That is how sports should be played.

Since I have yet to chime in, basically, I like watching American Football but I like playing Soccer. I have always grown up playing soccer and I think it is a more challenging sport due to the active nature of the game, no stopping. It takes skill to use your feet to control the ball while others are using the skills they have with their hands. Football is fun also to play, but not very helpful to someone fast and agile like soccer would be.

Yes, but you realize soccer is skill with the feet right? It's very difficult to master foot-eye coordination because it is just unnatural for us. To be able to run at full speed and be under complete control of the ball requires a greater amount of skill than American football.
Its a different skill. It doesn't make it any harder. How much hand-eye coordination is needed for a QB to deliver a football accurately to a moving target that is ten, twenty, or even thirty yards away within a five to seven second window?

Wait, you mean the QB aims? I thought he just throws to where the playbook calls, adjusting a little to allow for change in condition?

To watch, american football. To play, soccer.

Agreed. But I think the watch vs play factor is totally different for soccer. I can't stand watching. I don't get what's so exciting. Football has thousands of times more excitement.

Well, soccer has thousands of times more excitement than baseball, and people watch that.

No. No it doesn't.

Every pitch in baseball is a potential play/home run/exciting throw... (And I think baseball is fairly mundane)

Soccer is a bunch of standing around, kicking a ball, jogging up... once in a while a guy makes contact with another guy that results in one of them being carried off the field on a stretcher... only to return two minutes later once their oscar-worthy flop secures a yellow card.

Soccer as a sport = Professional Wrestling in legitimacy..

You can always tell who didn't play soccer. I watch real Football, a.k.a. soccer, for a month every four years. don't waste my time with other sports really...

Yes there's a potential for a home run, a hit, an error, whatever you want to say, but there's a lot of break time in baseball. Great job.

Soccer has a constant moving around with the ball. Granted a game can end 0-0, but the same can happen in baseball. At least everyone is on the move, and you can get close to the goal a lot of times and have a lot more close calls than in baseball. Baseball, you know when someone's gonna popout or foul, or what not. It's not THAT exciting. The few moments of excitement in baseball are nothing.

Football... well, you see teams actually make touchdowns, plays, passes, etc. There's a SHORT TERM GOAL (the first down), and that is where the excitement is. You want to see your team hit that first down. If they do, you cheer. Sure they don't have to have a scoring drive, but lets say you do make a couple of first downs, at least you're pretty happy, unless your team is getting clobbered to begin with.

The point I want to make is that soccer, like hockey is a game that can end with very little points. Why? Because there's only 1 goal, the goal. Given that the goal is very hard to get to, you won't have much scoring excitement. In some respects, this is why in baseball you have a lot to look forward to. You look for a hit, and after that you look for a run. You look for the next batter to hit a single or double, and you hope it keeps going so you build up in steps for a scoring run. Just like in football, you build up first downs until you're close enough for a TD pass or a field goal.

Soccer is great, but its still miles and miles away from beating American football. I've been to soccer matches. The atmosphere is great, but so what? Ever been to an NCAA Football game? Now college loyalty is unmatched even by the rowdiest fans in the World Cup. The traditions, the bands, the cheering, etc etc make college football games the best in the world.

Hmmm...I came in here expecting the football fans to be making all the idiotic remarks, but just the opposite is true.
