American Football would be much better if there wasn't a frikin' commercial after every play.

Soccer as a sport = Professional Wrestling in legitimacy..

I hadn't really thought of it that way but that's totally true. So much acting going on

Too bad the Pens lost.

With that said, American football is better. I don't like watching soccer for the same reasons I don't like watching baseball and golf ... too slow and not enough action.

Agreed. But I think the watch vs play factor is totally different for soccer. I can't stand watching. I don't get what's so exciting. Football has thousands of times more excitement.

Well, soccer has thousands of times more excitement than baseball, and people watch that.

No. No it doesn't.

Every pitch in baseball is a potential play/home run/exciting throw... (And I think baseball is fairly mundane)

True but you're forgetting the Soccer CROWDs. Soccer as a game is okay but it's funner to watch the brawls in the stands!

My votes Am. football btw

American Football for many reasons.

I think it has the most strategy of any sport. Meaning that the entire game is somewhat a coaching dual. Second, I find Soccer somewhat boring to watch and very frustrating. I can't stand the thought of 1 team "winning" the entire game but can't finish with a goal, then the other team gets a lucky bounce and wins 1-0.

both have their merits. both sports are good. most sports are fun to spectate except baseball. (and although i am adept at, and enjoy playing, baseball... it, too, is the least fun sports of all the majors)

American football, on the other hand, has more action and is more likely to keep my attention.

It stops and starts every few seconds, how does that hold your attention more?

Because you can actually figure out whats going on, it isn't non-stop chaos - there's far more organization to it.

Has there ever been a soccer game as exciting to watch as this game?

Just can't cut it for me when there's only one way to score and you can't truly watch how those scores are setup.

As has been mentioned a couple times, hockey > both. However, of those two, I'd definitely choose football.

If my numbers are off, I apologize, this is the best i could do for right now.
National Geographic had a pretty good chart about worldwide viewership for all major championship games. It was in their Soccer issue. I tried finding it online, but with no luck.
141M in the USA, we only have around 300M. So half the country tuned in, thats pretty damn good.
700M for the World Cup, which is a small percentage when you look at the population of the world now (still 6B?)
I don't know who watches the English Premier League, I'm assuming most of Europe, but I don't have a guestimate for population.

My argument has flaws I know, but if you think of it through percentages the SuperBowl is a huuuuge draw.

but to add to that argument, the Premiership League draws in viewers from all over the world, even though it's only english teams. IIRC, China has ridiculous numbers watching English Football, even though they don't have many (any?) chinese players.

edit: btw, the championship game is tomorrow, Apr 24 Manchester United vs. AC Milan

Another thing I love about soccer is the atmosphere at games.

Instead of just screaming, the fans actually sing songs. You can't understand it unless you goto a major club or international game but the who stadium just swells up with emotion as the fans sing to lift up their team.

so they're bored and drunk, big deal

Really, truly, there is no sporting atmosphere like a European football (soccer) game - and I've watched a lot of sports.

There are drums in the crowd, trumpets, flares and fireworks, 50 foot flags... people care y'know? If you think Americans care about baseball, and Australians about rugby, they don't. Not really. Football fans really *really* care, and that's what makes the singing different.

When is the last time you've been to an NFL playoff game?

Whens the last time an entire nation came to a standstill on a weekday for a football game? Oh thats right, never.

It's called Monday Night Football.

Everyone talks about it at the office on Tuesday. I don't think I've ever heard someone getting excited at the water cooler here in the US about a soccer game.

I wouldn't call American football "the" world sport, either. Or rugby. Or tennis.

It's what you like that really matters. Who cares what everyone else is doing? What they do doesn't validate what you do.

Soccer is only extremely popular in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe.
because it's not popular in the US, it isn't "the" world sport? LOL.

I'm not saying it's better than American football, but it is "the" world sport.

It confuses me that people get so worked up about this. Do you really care what people over in some other country are watching?

It's almost as if you're trying to say that your interests are important because other people share those interests.

I'm not putting down soccer, you shouldn't put down football.

Football, NCAA football in peticular. Husker Power.

Yeah yeah, other countries like soccer more. But done even think that the passion for football isnt at least as big as others have for soccer. How many soccer teams fill stadiums of better than 85,000 on gameday? We just do not riot at games.

I have tried to watch soccer when the last world cup was on, and it didnt hold me. Nothing happened. Sure it is always going without breaks like football, but it didnt mean anything was happening. The stratagy involved in football is just much more advanced, and to me and most Americans, is far,f ar more intersting.

And for the record, QB is the hardest possition to play in all of sports.

Exactly, soccer is "the" world sport because of the fact that it draws such a large audience. When FIFA World Cup was on countries united to support their teams. When its the NFL Playoffs, it's just the different cities. Those that say that soccer is not the world sport because it is not popular in the United States is forgetting the fact that Americans think they are so much better than everyone else, but that's for another post.

No.

On the contrary, the popular trend on this forum is to put down the US, and treat the US as if it's not part of the world. How can something be a "world" sport if it's not popular in every country?

There are tennis players from all different countries, but I don't hear that being pushed as a "world sport". What about swimming? I think just about everyone has swam before. And it's not just the US. Canada is big into Hockey, Puerto Rico is big into Baseball. India and Australia like cricket. Are they being "rude" for not adopting soccer as the most popular sport?

Stop trying to push your likes on everyone else.
