Because it's popular in 90% of countries, and I'd it is the *most* popular in more than 75% of countries. I don't have the figures but you can start off with the whole of Africa and Europe, most of Asia, Russia, etc...
There are tennis players from all different countries, but I don't hear that being pushed as a "world sport". What about swimming?

Canada is big into Hockey, Puerto Rico is big into Baseball. India and Australia like cricket. Are they being "rude" for not adopting soccer as the most popular sport?
The Australians also like rugby, as do the New Zealanders, but I think that about covers it for non-soccer-playing nations. Not many.

This thread is about which sport is better, isn't the whole point to to push your own view? You know, like in one of those 'argument' things...
I think there is very little chance of the rest of the world picking up American football, but there's a much bigger hope for the US getting interested in soccer.
