The Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is seeking to “inform and sensitize” reporters nationwide about how “offensive” the term “illegal immigrant” is to Latinos.

Diversity Committee member Leo Laurence announced the campaign against “illegal immigrant” and “illegal alien” terminology in the latest issue of the organization’s magazine, Quill, writing that those who have not obtained citizenship but have entered the country without any prior approval should be called “undocumented workers” or “undocumented immigrants.”

So let me get this straight. These people are suppose to inform the general public of news events but when someone illegally immigrates to the United States, they are not an illegal immigrant?

And people here claim that Fox News is bias, this is the Society of fucking Professional Journalists.

What a joke.

Are any of the journalists at Fox part of this Society? Because it would make you look pretty silly if there were...

Fuck illegals.
And fuck the presidents who've supported them, ever since Reagan.
And fuck Fox news, not that they are ever relevant, just, fuck them!

The organization's current president is a second-string local reporter at a Cincinnati TV station; the incoming president is an associate editor of the South Florida Business Journal. I guarantee you will not recognize any of the organization's Board of Directors unless you happen to live in one of the minor markets where they work. Not exactly a collection of industry giants.

In fact, this "Society of Professional Journalists" might more aptly have been dubbed "the Society of Journalists Mainly Known to Friends and Family".

Friend umbrella, I doubt you will find Fox and Friends in this Society; even they would be loath to associate with such lightweights.

That is what I figured after reading up on this Society which has me scratching my head as to why the OP would even bother to post this bullshit. Bad shill.

When an organization has a "Diversity Committee" it's certain that (1) people who really want to ride the "politically correct" wave will volunteer to be on the committee; and (2) they will always come up with some concept that they want the organization to agree to. (otherwise, the committee has no reason to exist)

. . . about how “offensive” the term “illegal immigrant” is to Latinos illegal immigrants.

Fixed.

Its good if they are offended. Being an illegal should carry a negative stigma with it.

Have not seen or read anything in the news in the last few years to make me believe any exist anymore. I thought Journalists sought truth, and did not advocate. That's what the editorial page is for.

Well, there are a lot of brainwashed liberals here who hate anyone who's not part of their groupthink.

Whereas we can see you are clearly accepting of those who think differently than you. Unlike the brainwashed liberals.

Yes, some people do claim that. I wonder why?

During the height of the health care debate a Fox News vice president Bill Sammon sent a memo to staff asking them to refer to the 'public option' as the 'government option.'

Please use the term ‘government-run health insurance,’ or, when brevity is a concern, ‘government option,’ whenever possible.”

This memo came shortly after Republican pollster Frank Luntz advised Sean Hannity thusly:

“If you call it a public option, the American people are split,” he explained. “If you call it the government option, the public is overwhelmingly against it.”

This edict was backed up by Michael Clemente, Fox’s senior vice president for news, who responded to Sammon's email: “#3 on your list is the preferred way to say it, write it, use it.” He was referring to the longer version: “The public option, which is the government-run plan.”

In all fairness to your quote about the Fox News memo, it IS a government option. Calling it a "public option" is a misnomer designed to make the public think it's something it's not. Kind of like the Patriot Act.

In all fairness either way Fox News is basing its decisions on polling done by a GOP strategist.

Because MSNBC doesn't put its own spin on everything, to make sure it caters to their own target audience?

Except that this time, they're right. The government chose the term "public option" to put their own spin on it. It isn't really a "public" option any more than the Patriot Act is a "we want to save our citizens" act.

Bashing one without bashing the other is kind of silly, imo.

Actually MSNBC does put a spin on things. For instance they fired anchors who were critical of Bush and the Iraq war, and pressured journalists not to be critical of the president when his approval ratings were high.

JESSICA YELLIN, CNN CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: I think the press corps dropped the ball at the beginning. When the lead-up to the war began, the press corps was under enormous pressure from corporate executives, frankly, to make sure that this was a war that was presented in a way that was consistent with the patriotic fever in the nation and the president's high approval ratings.

And my own experience at the White House was that, the higher the president's approval ratings, the more pressure I had from news executives -- and I was not at this network at the time -- but the more pressure I had from news executives to put on positive stories about the president.
I think, over time...
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: You had pressure from news executives to put on positive stories about the president?
YELLIN: Not in that exact -- they wouldn't say it in that way, but they would edit my pieces. They would push me in different directions. They would turn down stories that were more critical and try to put on pieces that were more positive, yes. That was my experience.

I'm sure if a memo was leaked from MSNBC instructing anchors and reporters to call the patriot act the police state act because its what the democrats wanted that would be totally cool right?

You kidding? "Progressives" LOVE the war. Of course they don't want people to be critical of it. Seriously, the war is absolutely central to everything they're trying to do. Without the "war", there is no Patriot Act, there is no DHS, and there is no control over every aspect of our lives. The war is absolutely paramount. It must be there to keep the chattle in line...er, I mean, the people safe.

It doesn't make spin right. That said, though, people who watch Fox News and MSNBC know what they're getting. They watch it for a reason...namely, they watch it because it tells them what they want to hear. It's a TV station.

Another thing to keep in mind is it's not white Mexicans immigrating, after all they live good in Mexico but instead it's the indigenous immigrating, aka American Indian, one could claim they have rights to be here so it's controversial calling them illegal
